I'm trying to convince her to leave it but it is the first thing she bought with her own money after her husband left.  It is old but she may just have to try to make room for it in the luggage.  I will not take that away from her.  It is a point of pride.  We will make it work.

Ok, you didn't say it has sentimental value before. So yes, I would make room for it no matter what just so she can bring it. Also make sure she has TFC/GMA on the television.

 I'd do the same. Besides, you'll look like a nice guy before you look like a meany.

I try.  I do keep reminding myself that she is leaving her home, family, friends, familiar culture to be with me.  I think she has suffered enough!!! LOL

Totally understand that.

as to clothes and other personal items, my wife found most of hers impractical for here in the states, plus she enjoyed the trips to the mall to replenish her wardrobe, what she will miss (at least based on my wife's experience) is seasonings, magic sarap, certain fruit candies and the like. I see you are in Chicago, the weather will be similar to here (I live in Ohio), be prepared for high heat bills this winter and a sudden taste for winter fashion clothes

I do anticipate higher heating costs as they will probably want the heat a little higher than I am used to.  Actually, at the rate my approvals are going they may miss the entire winter season!

Thanks for the heads up on the seasonings.  I will bring that up with her.

Congrats on your journey.  I envy your timeline!!!!  Things are a bit slower this year.  It is slow enough that I will plan another trip to see them.  I was hoping to be able to go and get them in December but now that we are probably looking January or February, I need to get back there.  It will be a good opportunity to make sure she has everything she needs for the interview.

we lucked out, our entire process was 115 days, we were lucky. Find a good Asian market you can take her to also, your dining options are going to be changing!

Chicago has a large Filipino community and even a Jolibee!!!  I will make sure she is very familiar with the area because she is a great cook and I will want her food.

My wife and stepson are greatly looking forward to our trip to Chicago to report our marriage to go to Jollibee, I too enjoy my wife's cooking, but miss potatoes and beef on a more regular basis

I love to cook so we will be sharing those duties.  She is bringing two teenagers so I want them to acclimate as easily as possible.  I may lean more towards my favorites when its my turn to cook.  I am hoping to show the the pure joy of a good medium rare ribeye!!!  Steak there is not quite the same.  I told her I would try her avocado shake if she tries my guacamole!  We are both afraid of the other's version of avocado delicacies!

avocado shakes are not bad, same for avocado ice cream, my wife likes all beef cooked well, still feel guilty when I "burn" her a steak. Filipino spaghetti is horrendous, get them used to good spaghetti as soon as possible

What???? You don't like sweet spaghetti with chopped hot dogs?? :D

My future asawa is a great cook and I love her food, but when we finally are able to live together I think I will be the one cooking the Spaghetti along with my garlic, basil, cheese bread.

Oh...yes, I've had that.  That along with their Filipino sausage (bad soft mushy hot dog) is not something I will ever crave!  I will introduce them to Nathan's dogs ASAP!

The look I get from her and the kids when I describe guacamole is hilarious.  They do not understand onions and tomatoes with avocado.  Milk and sugar is normal for them!  I will gladly try her shake but I am glad that balut is very hard to find in Chicago.  She is from Pateros, the birthplace of balut!

Au contraire, Balut is available in every Asian grocery I have been in in Columbus Ohio, remember, she is more industrious than you are, she will find it
