SSN or marriage license first

Get the SSN before the marriage license and save the trouble. Plus once you get married it just takes you once to go there and change the name.

In my experienced I went to get a SSN and they told me to go get married first before getting my SSN so that I won't go back again and change my last name. So that's why I got my Marriage license first and got married before getting my SSN.

I have to agree with most of the comments above: Joan got her SSN 2 weeks after arriving then we got married and she changed her name at SSA after getting her EAD (it was not worth the headache to try before the "new 'official'" documents). It was not a flawless ride, but it rarely is with SSA! One note: The Social Security NUMBER won't change after the name change (if she changes her name), so she can use the SSN to open a joint bank account with you (something that is very helpful at the ROC phase) and she will have the SSN to begin to look for jobs about the time her EAD is due to arrive (if she wants to work or get a driver's license).

Do take a few days to enjoy being together in her new home before dealing with this...stuff! Congrats and best of luck.

If you are sure there will not be a name change, it makes no real difference. The problem of getting a SSN is almost always related to name changes. The times it is denied because of the K1/I94 status are less often and these issues are more likely to be cleared up by visiting a different office and bringing a copy of there own rules
