I live and work not too far away from Lynchburg and just learned that my bosses daughter spent the weekend at VA Tech with some friends and was supposed to return to her university later this afternoon. My boss is out of the office today so I have not heard if he has heard from her, but it certainly brings it closer to home.

Similarly...:

Only need a driver's license and a (bigger) check to go out and buy a car, then get drunk and kill someone...

A car's sole purpose is not a weapon.

In 2005, 16,885 people were killed

in alcohol-related crashes

- an average of one almost every half-hour.

But a car's purpose is to drive, a gun's purpose is to shoot.

I am all in favor of civilians owning firearms; however, I do think there needs to be stricter background checks and perhaps a psychological evaluation performed beforehand. Maybe a firearms safety course as well. Unfortunately, there are too many unstable people out there giving all the sane gunowners a bad name.

Another reason to have better concealed-carry laws - these things never seem to happen in places where it's possible more people are 'carrying' than just the bad guys..

That is not the answer. :bonk:

Wouldn't you consider it ironic that stats are reversed when it come to deaths?

I've said it before... humans are deadly. We can turn anything into a weapon if we want to. It's a shame to see blame transferred to inanimate objects when the real suspect is in your nearest mirror.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

AP is saying 31 dead, and the reports are now that the 'Asian' shooter isn't right; the Asian guy is a reporter who was arrested for crossing the police line.

Can we keep the gun control/shoulda armed them comments on the dl until maybe the bodies aren't warm? Christ.

Local sports radio station (620am) reporting the murderer was 'looking for his girlfriend'. Also reported that he chained the hall doors so the students couldn't get out and executed them. 31 confirmed dead and unknown more injured. Too bad he can only die once.

That picture kinda gives me flashbacks of Kent State for some reason.

The Kent State massacre. That was quite a long time ago. I hope you weren't standing in the crowd!

Update (am sure you're all seeing it too) - very very sad..keeps rising.. (a dark day)

The man responsible for murdering 32 people — the worst mass-murder shooting in American history — who carried no ID, remained unidentified late Monday, police said.
