changing joint bank account before interview

Hello all,

My husband and I are going to close the current joint bank account (we opened it this March) and open a new joint account from a different bank. We submitted statements of the current bank for March and April. Will this switch raise any questions or red flags to the interviewer? Also, does it matter that whether the USC is the primary account holder or not? Thank you.

Having a bank account isn't a requirement of adjusting status.

You will be fine. Like the person above said having a joint bank account is not a condition of AOS. It can help show that you are co mingling your lives including financial but it is NOT a requirement.

A joint bank account isn't required so it wouldn't be a red flag. If they thought you only open a bank account for immigration purposes, so like a week before and have 0 activity in the account, then it may go against you but since you have old account statements then you have zero worries on that part.

To answer your second question, it doesn't matter which one of you is the primary account holder.

Regarding your 2nd question. From my experience, yes. We got a noid, one of the points of which was that there is no indication that we own this account jointly (there are 2 names on the statement, but it's not enough for them). Before that we only submitted statements, but in response to the noid we had to get a letter from the bank saying that we both are equal owners of our  checking and savings accounts and we wrote sworn statements that both of us has equal access to the money. We have a lawyer, so that's the lawyer's decision. It's very strange that they made this argument considering that having a join account is not a requirement at all.

I'm surprised you had to go through this....didn't the bank statements show both of your names on the account?

It did, i just edited my post too and added that : ) We are very surprised as well! Also both of us used this account of course and in the noid they wrote that "it seems like one user uses the account more often than another" and apparently it raises questions too, i swear it's even funny! Apparently you also need to use it equal amount of times, Lol

That's just ridiculous for someone to take issue with that...My husband and I had a joint account for years (we don't now), and while my name was on it I never ever used it---we just had all the bill payments withdrawn from it.  

 

I would think the fact that both  names were on the account would be the main thing---not who uses it for what, when, and how often.  Ridiculous.
