Hi,

I will be soon moving to NYC to be with my fiance.

We are hoping to have a civil ceremony as soon after I arrive as possible, so that we can file for AOS (the big family wedding will be later in the summer). I was just wondering how many people from VJ applied for their marriage license in NYC and whether the beneficiary needed a SSN at the time, or whether you can get the license with only the SSN of the US citizen? I have heard how long it can someties take to get a Social Security Number, and would be really frustrated if our marriage plans would have to wait for that to happen!

Any advice from people in NYC would be gratefully appreciated!

Thanks

No SSN requirement in the state of NY to marry, in our case I had the SSN because I am the US citizen, my wife did not have her's yet, and we had no problems at all getting marriage license, and married in NYS (All she needed was her passport for ID, and birth cert for age), a few weeks after we then applied for her SSN and were able to use married name.

Requirements in NY

A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting to the issuing clerk one of the following age related documents:

1. Birth Certificate (Foreign Fiancee)

2. Baptismal record

3. Naturalization record

4. Census record

And one of the following identity related documents:

1. Driver's license

2. Passport (Foreign Fiancee)

3. Employment picture ID

4. Immigration record
