So I'm 17 years old turning 18 in about two weeks,  I was born in Canada to a U.S citizen father. He was a citizen for about 9 years before I was born. Him and my mother were already married so I wasn't born out of wedlock. I have a Canadian passport that's expired since 2015. I've been in America for about 9 years and I've gone to 4th-12th grade. I don't have social security number or anything I've never needed one until now cause I'm trying to apply for financial aid and I can't do that. I'm not even sure I have an actual status because I don't think I have a visa or anything. I'll be sending my form n-600 this week. ( it's proof of citizenship because I was born a citizen cause of my father ) In one of the questions they asked what I was and the answers were " lawful permanent resident (I'm not) , a nonimmigrant(I'm not) or a refugee( I'm not) so I put OTHER and just put Canadian. My question is

1. Did I file the right form ?

2.Am I here illegally?

feel free to point out anything else you might've noticed.

Just because your father is a citizen does not mean he can pass citizenship on to you.  Does he meet the requirements found in the link above?

Good luck

My mother passed away and I've been living with him since 2008 in Florida. He's on my birth certificate, he was naturalized 9 years before my birth and lived here before and after my birth. I'm not sure about the taking care of me till 18 in writing thing.but he is taking care of me till next week which is when I turn 18.

What about your mother?  Is she a citizen now?

Is your father still alive ?  Did he recognize you as his child ?

He's still alive and he's taking care of me and has put me through school and stuff if that counts

So your issue with the N600 is you have to be the child of a USC AND a legal US resident .   It seems he is eligible to pas citizenship but it should have been done in Canada before you came to the US.  The good thing is because you are under 18 still you didn't accrue a bar yet.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
