The one caveat for fetuses that make them unlike humans who are declared dead is that they have the "potential" to "recover" from their deficits.

 

The problem is, as of right now, below a certain age that potential is zero. We don't have the ability. At 22 weeks a handful (and I mean a very small handful) survive with horrible deficits. Beyond that, just not practical. So their "potential" is moot at this point.

 

With that in mind, they aren't viable and have no potential if left "on their own". Therefore they aren't living. They require the host (their mother) and if they link is broken they cannot survive. That isn't living.

You like to use the literal definition of words to make your argument so let's go ahead and do that here. Let's look at definition number 1 "living, not dead". My 23 week old son certainly did not look dead in the ultrasound today. So by that definition he is "living" or "alive". Definition 2 "alert and active; animated". By what I saw in the ultrasound he definitely meets the criteria for that definition.

 

An unborn child is no less "living" than someone with an artificial heart for example. Take that system of outside support away (the artificial heart) and the person dies. No one tries to argue they aren't "living" though. I am not claiming there is a living baby from the moment of conception. I do know from what I saw today that a baby at 23 weeks certainly meets the criteria to be called "living".
