My husband was took his oath in April. He applied for a US passport the next day and received it two and a half weeks later, it was NOT expedited. If you need an expedited passport you must bring proof that international travel is within 14 days of your passport application. That's a requirement and there is no way around that requirement. When you take the oath you'll be given all of that information. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming oath!

Mark, as you rightly stated you can travel out with your British passport but cannot travel in once you become a citizen. My niece who is a toddler traveled with my sister to the UK on her UK passport - she was born in the US, while trying to return she was refused boarding. My sister had to get a US passport at the US Embassy in London. Caused a lot of headache (time off work, rescheduling of flights) and $$$$ for all sorts.

Deferring the oath is the way to go. From the timeline you are likely to take your citizenship test in September. A friend who applied October last year got her citizenship in May. My mum applied in November 2016, and is taking her test next week. So between 8 and 9 months, give and take.

PhilLuv is right you better not leave coming back will be a big issue, I have a dual passport and the American passport comes into play when you are re-entering only.

You mentioned booking flights with a passport no. I have bookied alot of flight tickets without being asked for a passport no I actually just booked and emirates flight and did not input a passport no. coz again I have two which would I input. I usually book online though if you are using anagent it may be different.
