Hi Everyone,

I know this has been asked many times, but because the situations are changing constantly, insurance information I found on the forum seems to be a bit dated and it is not related to us. (I also heard that the congress is still working on this or might have a plan already.) Here is some information specific for us:

  • My fiance and I are moving back to the US together. Apparently neither of us is going to have a job right away, so we plan to buy insurance as a couple or separately without an employer.
  • We plan to move to Los Angeles (is there any state or city specific insurance plan?)
  • My fiance is using K-1 (must we get married first or file AOS first before we can start a plan?)

Please let us know :jest: Thanks!!!!!

Are you The US citizen or your fiance?  Insurance can still be obtained through the ACA, better known as Obamacare. I'm not sure which one of you is the US citizen, but whomever is can buy a policy through the exchange now and add his/her spouse to the policy as soon as they receive their green card. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for Obamacare. Good luck!

I am a US citizen. So if I get ACA, my fiance will have to get a non-ACA insurance until the AOS is approved, which could be a year later. Anyway, that is all good.

For private insurance, can my fiance get a plan as soon as we land in the US, or do we have to get married first or even file AOS first?

Thanks!
