MAC O/S X and above can run Linux applications. It has the same tools as UNIX. VI editor and eMacs. You can build custom scripts too. Very good.

My only machine that has Windows is my Dell Laptop.

I thought I saw deja vu earlier.

Yeah I clicked on it twice

Vista is much more than an eye candy upgrade to XP. I don't have the link but I read list of all of the new features, enhancements, security, etc and it's quite extensive. There's a lot more to it than some new 'bling'. Oh and if you want DirectX 10 support you *must* get Vista. There will never be a DX10 patch for XP. I don't think there's any DX10 games out yet but I could be wrong. I'm not up on gaming much anymore. Vista is going to be a great OS once the bugs are worked out and drivers are available and fine tuned. The key is, don't be an early adopter. ;)

I think the comparison to OS X is invalid as well. OS X runs only on specific crApple hardware and provides a fraction of peripheral and application support of Windows. Some like the look of OS X but I find the interface to be very cartoon-ish and wasteful (space wise).

FWIW, I'm not a Microsoft suckup. I'm posting this message from a laptop that has a legal OEM license of Windows XP Pro but I'm running Linux (Ubuntu Feisty Fawn) by choice. I prefer Linux but I'll admit it's not for everyone. The nice thing is we all have a choice

We purchased a new pc with vista. So far the only problems have been the video driver during gaming, which was easily fixed with a download. We simply avoid d/l any video drivers on the microsoft updates until it is all sorted out. I like it fine and it does look pretty :P but I can't see a huge difference from xp.

I had the same video problem, but i just needed to update my drivers.

The only thing that I still have a problem with is the wireless. If I close my laptop at work and open it at home without turning it off it takes a while for windows to find my wireless network...

There are a lot of changes behind the scenes, but most users wont see or understand them. Yes DX10 will be vista only. But I doubt many games will go DX10 only. To really take advantage of DX10 you also need a DX10 video card. So games going DX10 only is just a recipe for poor sales.

Yeah, Linux is still mostly a programmers OS. Its getting better though, especially with Ubuntu. I run linux or freebsd for my web servers, but for desktop use, I still use Windows.

I am looking at building / purchasing a new system myself but am finding it a little difficult to find hardware that is Vista compatible..

Why not get a dell or something as it is now coming with Vista anyway

A similar system is over $1,300 extra in price. That is when compared to buying the components individually.

Edited by Infidel

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

How to load Vista

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

the only warning is if you have a newer computer that is Vista capable (really this goes for owners of lab-tops with all the bells and whistles)

Don't do a 'full install' You should do the upgrade where available.

Thing is driver upgrades are slowly comming on board.

When installing Vista Home on a tablet PC (shoulda got the Ultimate) the camera didn't work neither did the touch screen work well, the finger ID pad, Bluetooth driver, and a few other things failed, and sony is slowly getting those driver up for download.

I guess I'll have to hold off on installing it

Vista is ok, we use it here at school, but at home its a crapshoot. You need ALOT of memory for it to run to its full potential. It is pretty but also annoying. when you open a document, it asks you 4 times if your sure you want to open/save or whatever with the doc. its hilarious.

about linux, yes linux rules, but ppl want GUI OS's, most ppl 85% of ppl dont want to program their own OS or have the time. and NO you cannot do the same in linux as you can in windows. dont get me wrong, im a linux fan, but unless your really good with commands prompts and programming, you may as well stick with gui windows. still, linux is still restrictive of the things windows can do.

The only reason I have Windoze is for a few games and, unfortuntely, my slide scanner isn't supported in Linux. But I cannot install the slide scanner drivers in Vista, so that's that.

After I got that scanner, I vowed to never buy Linux incompatible hardware again.
