US-born Citizen Marrying a Canadian Citizen

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and it's great all this help is out here for lost souls like myself.

I am a US-born citizen who is going to marry a Canadian citizen in July of 2018. I should clarify, July 2018 is just our wedding party and cultural ceremonies. The legal/court marriage will take place whenever it is optimal to do so.

My questions is what is the best route to get her to the US legally after July 2018? I've read up on K-1 Visas, but I was wondering if there were any alternate routes that I may have not considered.

Additional info:

I am going to visit her end of this month in Toronto. Getting legally married in Canada is an option if this helps our process.

She is planning on visiting me in the US this coming November. Again, if it is ideal for our process, we can get legally married then.

Let me know if I need to provide more information. Thank you all in advance for your help!

If you are doing the K1 you shouldn't do any kind of ceremony that can be perceived as a wedding prior to the fiancée entering the US. That can get your K1 visa denied. Search the forum about it, there are many threads and bad experiences. I agree with Georgia16, just get married and do the spousal instead if that's what you are planning.

I would do a quick marriage now somewhere easy and quick get the papers off real quick for a spouse visa CR-1.

It takes about a year to get.

Thank you both for your feedback!

Would a marriage certificate from Canada count as proof of marriage?

Certainly

Where you get married doesn't matter. It's the "half-way" ceremonial stuff that can mess up the K1. You have to be either completely unmarried  (no ceremonial, cultural or anything - you can have an egagment party, but ppl have even gotten in trouble for sending pics from those, not necessarily from Canada, for seeming like it was a cultural "wedding" ceremony) or completely married.

As long a you get legally married  (anywhere) and can provide evidence, that is good for the spousal. Just do the legal stuff next month on your visit and file right away would be the smoothest way I believe. As said it'll take about year to get. She can visit in the meantime- as long as she has connections still to Canada. :)

Good luck
