Maybe early hints of marriage could be a red flag but not necessarily.  We started talking about marriage before we met in person.  And we will soon be married five years and are very happy.  Just take it slow and get to really know each other.  But nothing wrong with doing some early research.

Thank you. Exactly the point I was trying to make. And I'm definitely being very cautious

I will share our story with you.  I met my now-wife online on a dating website on July 28, 2012.  I first visited her in the Philippines September 15, 2012.   On September 18, 2012 I proposed.  On September 22, 2012 we were married in the Philippines.  On July 20, 2013 she arrived in the USA!  Talk about a whirlwind romance! She was 19 and I was 54.  She was beautiful (still is), me not so great...hahaha.  Once we got the marriage certificate we filed for a CR-1.  Between our first meeting and her interview at Manila Embassy I visited her another three times.  So talk about a lot of RED FLAGS.  (I believe that getting married was a safer bet for us due to the red flags.  I also believe that being at my wife's interview at the Manila Embassy helped. It certainly didn't hurt.  Interestingly enough, the CO asked me more questions than she did my wife.)  We overcame all the red flags because we had a genuine love and relationship.  I knew the day I first met her in person that she was the one.  I know many people here are warning you but you should know once you meet your fiance in person...hopefully.  If you are not sure after meeting him there are many more fish in the sea.  Just be very careful.  BTW: We just had a beautiful baby girl and we named her Heavenly Joy.  Many people told us that our relationship would not last but it has.  We are more in love today than we were yesterday.   There are many people who warn about someone just wanting a green card.  That does happen for sure but you should be able to tell if your relationship is genuine.  I wish you all the best.  Good luck and God Bless.

Love your story and I'm so happy for you all! I appreciate the words of encouragement. I am well aware of the chance he could be scamming, but I truly feel without a doubt that he is sincere and that he is my soul mate. I will always stay cautious and watch for any shenanigans, but I'm gonna remain optimistic until he gives me a reason to feel otherwise. Congratulations on your baby girl!!!

I didn't see anywhere that she stated she was filing paperwork before her scheduled trip..If I read correctly, she said once she returns to the States...Also she stated he was hinting about marriage, not actually popped the question and as far as the age gap, you will be fine..However, Lagos is one of the hardest embassies so you want to be prepared...I know they love plenty of face time, but since you will be filing the K-1, one of  their main requirements when it comes to face time is that you have at least met within the 2 years time frame and plenty of evidence to back it up (be sure to keep traveling itinerary, hotel receipts (if you that is your accommodations) and any or everything that involves you two (Not about the quantity but more like the quality of evidence)..I would suggest if there are any forms that will require his signature, I would download forms (at least 5 if there are mistakes) and take them with you to Nigeria..Family is important to them, so be sure to take plenty of pics with close family and friends..Although pics are secondary, but they help out a lot..I think you will be fine..Last but not least, you are going to have so much fun..I know I did the 2 times I have gone and going back again in August..

Wishing you luck on your journey and a safe trip as well!

My fiance and I met face to face 6 months after we started talking.   He proposed about a week into my first trip.   I came home and filed a few months later because we were waiting on some documents, although I would have filed right after my trip otherwise.  We knew before I even visited that we were in love and wanted to spend our lives together.  Meeting just confirmed what we already knew.  When you know, you know!

My advice-

1) Like others have said, take lots of pictures with him, his family, places you're going, etc.

2)  Keep receipts from activities that you do, as well as your boarding passes.

3)  FRONT LOAD your petition.   This is one of the most important things for Nigeria.

4)  Most importantly, be careful.  Have fun and enjoy yourself and your time together.   And eat Suya (haha)!

I have now visited four times and was present on the grounds for his interviews although Nigeria doesn't let you go in with them for the interview like some consulates do.  I highly suggest being there for his interview if you do end up filing for him.

If you read my story don't be alarmed that we were denied because it was for other reasons.  We were initially approved having only met one time before filing, only knowing each other 6 months before getting engaged, and getting engaged on the first trip.  The interview was my third trip there.  The important thing is to front load and have all the right evidence of your relationship.  It's all about being prepared and being honest!

Safe travels!   Always here if you have any questions!

On another note, make sure you apply for your Nigerian visa on time because sometimes they take a bit of time!

On another note, if you go into your profile and edit it to add Nigeria as the country, it will add your threads in our portal automatically, which means users that have dealt with the Nigerian embassy will see your posts.  Right now you'll only get responses from people in the general forums (as well as some Nigerian-related users that happen to stumble on your post).

It will help you throughout your journey to get more country-specific answers.

once you meet and you sure he is your ideal man you can go ahead with the K-1 but make sure by the time it get to his interview you would have visited him again, if not once then twice before his interview for that will give you more pictures and more boarding passes and trips together. It will help you with more receipts. I would make sure you focus on your evidence to the embassy just as you will focus on your relationship. Long as I know Ghana is now the most difficult embassy as we speak now and not Nigeria though Nigeria have it own issues. Good luck

Hello!

I am a U.S. citizen and my fiance is in Nigeria. We will meet for the first time in September and be spending 10 days together. I was hoping to start the k1 visa process on my return to the states, but I'm worried that it may get rejected; one because he is Nigerian, and we all know that having a Nigerian fiance or spouse is some kind of red flag due to scams. My other concern is that the consulate will question our relationship because we have only met one time and we've only been together for a 6 months. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Hello! You share a very similar situation to mine :) Don't be nervous and trust in yourself. Once you get to Nigeria and see him you will know. I met my fiance in January 2016 and went to see him this Feb for 2 weeks. It was an awesome experience and his family, friends and the locals were SUPER nice. Don't let the "stereotypes" get you down, you know him and he knows you! Also, as long as you can prove your relationship is real through pictures and conversations (and other documents you send), you will be fine! I hope you have so much fun and really enjoy yourself. Feel free to send messages if you need any assistance!!
