I got my green card this week and plan a trip home to visit family. ( Can't wait to see my sister been almost a year now). Anyway I booked the tickets in my married name, not a problem since I have lots of ID in that name. My question is ............... my passport and visa are in my maiden name and my GC is in my married name. Now logic tells me when I go through customs they should be able to scan the GC and it should be linked to my passport in my maiden name. But should I also bring along my marriage certificate just incase? We all know how much logic these people have. And has anyone traveled since the new passport law came into effect? Should I also be concerned with being able to show the connection between my passport and the tickets ( that are in my married name) to the ticket agent also. Or will they only need to see a photo ID in the name of the ticket? I'm not sure if they are requesting to see passports now also. Thanks for any help. Freda

From what I've heard, you need to book the tickets in the same name that is in your passport. You also need to bring your marriage certificate (certified copy) to show the link between your passport and your GC.

The airline won't board you unless your ticket and passport are in the same name.

PS: Customs will have very little to do with any of it.

What Meauxna is saying is that the airline will deny you when you try to check in at the airport if the name on your ticket does not match the name on your passport....

Well just called USCIS and they gave me a number to call Customs and border protection. And according to their info line if the names differ on the documents as long as you can prove leaglly your name changed (through mariage, divorce adoption etc.) then all you need to to is bring along proof of this in my case my marriage license and it will be fine. So I guess all is well.

It is against international law for any airline to allow a passenger to board a flight if the name is diffrent on the passport and ticket.... yes for immigration you only need to show a link if the passport and GC are in diffrent names but that will not get you on the flight... call your airline they may be able to add your maiden name to your ticket to link the 2 names...

Freda,

Customs is concerned with what you are bringing back and forth with you. It's Immigration, not Customs, that is concerned with you and whether or not you should be allowed to enter.

Freda, from your posts I am still not sure that you understand what the issue is with your identification.

The name on your airline ticket MUST be the same as the name in your passport. The airline will NOT let you board if it isn't.

As long as you have your Green Card, Passport, and Marriage Certificate, you'll be fine with Customs/Immigration.

Heres my problem .............. I am traveling with my son a USC and all the id I have to prove I'm his Mother is in my married name not maiden. And everytime I have traveled since his birth I have had trouble proving I'm his mom with a different last name. I know I know before you all say his birth certificate he doesn't have one because he was born in Canada and because my husband and I were not married they wouldn't issue the report a birth abroad document without DNA proof? Now this was just at the consulate in Nova Scotia. In Montreal when I had my interview they would have but since my husband the USC wasn't there they couldn't. And since we have not been able to go back to Canada together to get it done. He has a US passport now so he can prove he is a citizen but on the application I used my married name since I was married when I applied. And I really wanted to use my married name so we would be able to avoid this whole ordeal again. I can't count the number of times I have gone through secondary screen for this and had to run through airports to catch a connecting flight. I understand their point of wanting to prevent child abduction and all that I agree with it I just wanted to save some of the hassel. Anyone who has children and travels knows the trying time it can be just getting through airports on planes and from one flight to the next without the addded time oh secondary screening. I just thought that us finally having the same last name I might be able to avoid some of it.

And I suppose I am the only person on here who hasn't done just that. You know if you did some looking you would see the backlog at passport offices all over the US and Canada because of the new laws. And who here was willing to take the chance of getting an interview date for a greencard and having no passport?? I am way beyond tired of people on here jumping on others for asking questions. Sorry if I am not as perfect as you and didn't run out the day after I got married and apply for a passport. Rest assured I will not bother you again asking for advise or help

There's no need to get all in a flap about it. I noticed that you had a story, and that quote was something I observed, that's is all there is there.

:) I kept it simple and didn't change my last name, but I've had my share of misunderstandings over that, too.

We're really just trying to point out that it's the airlines, not the CIS, that cares that your ticket and passport match. The immigration documents--you've got it covered.

I've never done this, but one suggestion for you would be a notarized travel letter for you & your son, to overcome the different last names issue. It seems that is the problem that you're most concerned with solving.

Freda, you need to relax. This entire threat has been comprised of people trying to help you. We've persisted when it was clear that you weren't understanding the problem with the airline. I don't think you should stop asking questions because of a comment that a VJ-er (a VERY knowledgable one) made. If you did, it certainly would be your loss.

Written communication can be misinterpreted very easily so you need to take a step back and take the comments with a grain of salt. Meauxna was not trying to insult you.
