Not good news, I'm afraid.

I-751 is still pending (August 2016 filers). My wife went in in September for the I-551 stamp and only got 6 months instead of a year (as we've seen several other VJ members report for Chicago). At the InfoPass, the officer told her sternly that she should NOT have applied for citizenship before ROC was completed, which counters everything we've been reading here on VJ.

She got an N-400 interview for today. I (USC spouse) went along, as we expected there might be a combo I-751/N-400 interview as several others have reported. Instead, the officer only wanted to see her, and told her that the case could not be adjudicated at this time because of the pending I-751. Apparently no option for combo interview at Chicago. No idea when they will actually get around to doing the I-751 (the officer said she would be called for an I-751 interview on another floor of the same building--but no idea when this might be.) Sigh. The only silver lining is that the field office is literally 4 blocks from where my wife works, so it's not a major time/money effort to get there, but still... Not the outcome we were hoping for today.

Better luck to all y'all with interviews coming up in the near future! :-)

From what I read, the officer was simply put, WRONG.

As per USCIS Policy Manual -Volume 12 - Part G - Chapter 5:

2. Spouses with Pending Petitions and Naturalization Applications

An application for naturalization may not be approved if there is a pending petition for removal of conditions. If an applicant’s petition to remove conditions is pending at the time of filing or is filed prior to the interview, USCIS will adjudicate the petition to remove conditions prior to or concurrently with the adjudication of the naturalization application. [6]

(Footnote #6):

"An officer should conduct the naturalization examination even if the petition to remove conditions is not in the CPR spouse’s A-file. The officer should follow internal procedures to request the petition. The officer must not approve the CPR spouse’s naturalization application until the officer has reviewed and approved the petition to remove conditions."

Sorry you had to go through this!

Just got a Case Update Notification, and logged in to see " USCIS has scheduled your oath ceremony and will mail you the appointment notice."  Since the name change fell through (so irritating), the process is going alot faster than we expected. I'm hoping in another day or two I'll be able to view the notice online.

Mine just mail, too! woohoo

Hey guys, my husband had his interview this morning. He passed!!! YIPPEE!! He said the 3 questions they asked were easy, the most trouble he had was remembering dates we traveled out of the country, He actually didn't remember dates, so the officer just asked where he went and was satisfied with that. We did request a name change, because my husband has 2 last names like most hispanics, but they insisted that he did not need to have a judicial ceremony and he can just use one last name. I don't know how his citizenship document is going to come out, it will probably still have 2 last names, and therefore he'll have to have that on his passport. Oh well. I guess it is what it is. I'm just happy he passed and it's over with. His appointment was at 8am and he was done at 8:50. He said the officer was extremely nice; this was in Greer, SC.

Hello!! It was the same in my case- I have two last names and only wanted one, but the officer said it was not technically a name change. However, when he printed my info, he asked me to make sure that all the info was correct and the name was written as I wanted. When I signed that paper there was only one last name, and my certificate only has one last name. He should have mentioned it before signing :(

Oh well, anyways, right after the ceremony they said that if there was anything wrong in our certificates we could approach them at the end, so he could still tackle this on the day of the oath. Just make sure he says something on Oath day before leaving if it's wrong! Good luck!!

Just got back from my interview in the New York field office, everything went smoothly and my application was approved. The officer was very friendly and respectful, and the process was a pleasant one. I got some electronic case updates within an hour and ELIS now shows "USCIS has scheduled your oath ceremony and will mail you the appointment notice." It seems same-day oath ceremonies are never available in New York. Glad to be through the hardest bit!

The only interesting thing to report is that the interview took a little longer than expected because they are rolling out new software for the officers to use and I was the first person to be put through it - maybe allow more time if your interview is in the next week or two.

Congrats!!

Could someone please update me? I became a US Citizen today :D

The Oath was long and boring, but the building was very pretty and we got flags and they read all the countries present. There were 361 of us today at Faneuil Hall in Boston :). Only one guest allowed, and we had to sit separately. We took pictures together outside .

Good luck everyone, almost there!!

@SamBillz Did you hear anything? I have heard from some of my friends who had their whole process completed within 6 months from the Houston field office. Ours seem to take so long. I was under the impression that online filers like yourself would be a little faster than paper filers like me, but it looks like it doesn't matter if you file online or through paper. I just hope to get an interview date by January. It's just getting prolonged for no reason. The wait is so frustrating.

@bountyhunter - Yeah it is frustrating but I am not really thinking about it much (I won’t lie that I do randomly check my account to see any updates). As they say, every case is different but I am hoping it won’t be too long from here. My only concern is what if I plan a vacation (we’re due for one) in the near future and then the dates somehow clashes with the interview date. Let’s hope not! Buddy, online or not, it’s all dependent on the case. Anyway, wishing you all the best!!!

You can try calling USCIS and speaking to a Level 2 officer.  Ask them if you have cleared your background check.   The regular customer service people won't be able to tell you this info, you have to request to be transferred to a L2 officer who can see your personal case info.

Thank you for this! I spoke to a customer service person and (after a long wait) a Level 2 rep, but they both were reading from a script and could not give me any good information. They put me on a call-back list, and after 4 hours a senior rep called me to let me know they investigated my case and noticed:

1. USCIS uses many different systems when processing applications, and for a small number of applicants that were routed through a certain system (which includes me!) a glitch causes the current status to be delayed by one step on the DHS website, and delayed by two steps in the egov case status website, but it should not affect the progress of the case.

2. My current status is actually in-line for interview, and has been since 7/28/2017. But (worryingly...), he said that even though the background check is complete, they may still request extra information or perform extra "pre-process checks" between now and my actual interview date, which could delay my case or reverse the current status.

They don't know when it will be fixed, but some google searching shows there are others with the same problem. I guess I need to stay close to my mailbox for the next few months!

No need to worry---what he said was normal, actually.  Manual processing checks (by USCIS, not FBI) continue right up until the oath ceremony.

Could someone please update me? I became a US Citizen today :D

Good luck everyone, almost there!!
