It has been already mentioned in this thread about receiving email/text notification and not actually seeing any updates on the website. This happened to me late last night that I received an email @ 12:47 am ("USCIS has taken action on your application, petition, or request and updated your account") and when I logged in, there was nothing. Then, I get a text at 1:37 am, sorry 9 text messages saying "your case is now updated. Please check my case..." I am sure it will be updated eventually :).

Question: Is that a normal format for them to send out OR are they specific to what the next update was about? I am awaiting biometrics appointment letter/confirmation.

Yes it's normal.

It normally takes 24-48 hours for the PDF to upload after receiving the email.

If the case status email is sent on a Friday, though, I've learned that you may not see something actually posted in the account until Monday (from my own experiences).

Yep I figured that much but I guess this should be a part of their improvement process. Why would you send out notifications BEFORE actually updating the case status.

My guess?  It's all done in batches instead of individually.  Like person A prepares the notices about to be mailed out...and person B scans the barcodes into the online system which sends out the auto-email before passing them to person C....and person C actually stuffs them into envelopes for actual mailing.

Or it's one person doing all 3 tasks, handling a couple of hundred notices/notifications per week.

So maybe IF it's done in batches every week or whatever (which makes more sense than individually doing them day-to-day), it's all a matter of computer lag?

Hell, I dunno...I'm just happy the online updating system exists, even if it does need a few kinks worked out.

Hi guys!

I also filed this month.

GC: 8/13/2011

N400 received: 7/17/2017 sent to Chicago

Questions:

- I have to travel to home country this week for 3 weeks, my mom has been in and out the hospital.

- Pretty sure my FP letter and appointment is going to take place when I'm away (given all these timelines that I see around here).

- What are my options? Should I call on Monday and explain my situation? Should I just take risk missing my FP appointment and do walk-in in August when I'm back stateside?

Thanks guys!

The way I see it, there are two possible scenarios here:

Your biometrics is scheduled for a date after you've already returned from your trip.

You miss the biometrics appointment, never requested a rescheduling, and walk in a month later asking if they'll do it now.

The first one is ideal, the second one is up to the discretion of the person at the fingerprinting center.

Some of the centers accept the walk-in afterwards, some will say you need to call USCIS and reschedule it for another time.

When you call USCIS to reschedule (keeping in mind that you are calling AFTER your original appointment date has passed), they may let you do it, or they may tell you you've abandoned your application because you did a no-show and didn't request the rescheduling beforehand (as it says on the back of the biometrics letter you will receive), and will have to file the N400 again.

Chances are your appointment will take place late August or soon after since you just filed last week...but what you can do in your situation is have someone check the mail for the FP letter while you are away.  If it comes in and the appointment is for when you are still out of the country, then that person can tell you and you can place a phonecall to USCIS from wherever you are and see about rescheduling it over the phone.

Hopefully you are scheduled for when you return to the US.  But you never know...so make sure you choose someone who will be vigilant about checking your mail and contacting you if the appointment letter arrives.

Thank you for your advices.

Do you think calling tomorrow will get me anything? I guess I can try but I have this feeling that it'll be useless.

And do you think they can re-schedule the biometric appointment over the phone? Read somewhere that most of the time, they won't even do that (i.e. have to send the notice letter asking for re-schedule).

Thanks again for your help!

Calling the customer service center isn't going to accomplish anything now because you probably haven't even received the application receipt number, am I correct?  Do you have the receipt number confirming the application has been accepted already?

If you have the receipt number, when you call USCIS they will just tell you to "wait for the biometrics letter in the mail" and then reschedule the appointment as soon as you get it.

They will tell you to make an infopass notice to reschedule.  I suggested the phone option for if you are out of the country when you need to contact them to reschedule (because obviously you cannot attend an infopass in person if you're not in the US).

Thanks Going Through for your speedy reply!

I do have the application receipt number, but no biometric appointment letter yet, so yeah - most likely they will tell me to wait. I suppose I can still give it a try, will see if that gets me anywhere.

I guess the absolute worst scenario is that I need to re-file my N400 and fork out the $725 again :( .... But I think this would be the absolute worst scenario.  My 10-yr GC is still good until 2023 so I am okay there I guess.

Thanks again! Btw - I should have joined this sooner, I didn't even KNOW you can do N400 online, should have done that instead! Oh well.
