I have a question. I just started to fill up my N400 form. I am very confused, it stated if the answer is not applicable just put NA.  Does it means all fields need to put NA if there don't have answers and I can't leave the form blank at all?

For example, I only have 2 kids. Should I put all NA on child 3&4 columns?

Some people put N/A in every single field, some put N/A in just the first field, some just leave it all blank.

Personally, I left every single field blank after listing my child's details (I only have one).  My application had no issues being accepted because of that.

Remember, they ask you before entering the child's details how many total children you have.  So the person reading the application will already know that you only have two, thus know that all the other fields wouldn't apply to you.

Thank you for your reply. How about other questions such as disabilities section, interpreter, and preparer? Should I put N/A to all this columns if I don have any?

If you didn't use an interpreter or a preparer, leave those blank.

If the sub-questions regarding disabilities do not apply to you (after checking "no" in the first part of the question), leave those blank.

Oh thanks, that's what confuses me after I read The instruction and it stated I need to put N/A if an item is not applicable or answer is none. So I thought I can't leave any column blanks at all on the forms.

Hi everybody, I had a question.. I had sent my application to the Arizona lockbox. Does anyone know if the fingerprint/biometric letter is mailed from Arizona? My online status says that the letter was mailed on 7/17 but I have not received it yet. If mailed from Los Angeles Field Office I think it should have arrived by now.. However if from Arizona it may still be in transit. Appreciate any replies!

It can take up to at least 10 days after they state a letter was mailed to actually receive it.  I had the online status saying "a letter was mailed" since July 14th and only got it yesterday.

The status uploaded online doesn't necessary reflect the true date of mailing.  A trick I learned on another forum: watch the upper left hand corner of that same screen to see the "last updated on" info...then you know that USCIS has actually "touched" the application and put movement on it somehow.

Like I said, my status said a letter had been mailed on the 14th...however when I checked my status again, it showed the page was "last updated on" the 18th (that's when I figured it was actually physically mailed...I received the letter on the 20th.  You'll get it soon, I'm sure!

I was like you, over-thinking the form a LOT...I ended up e-filing my N400 through their website, I was just as confused as you were when trying to do the paper application!

Hello Going through, thanks so much for your reply! That's interesting that yours took that timeframe too, I will keep an eye on my mail so. Good luck with your application! Interesting tip about the upper left hand corner date :)

Thanks!  Good luck to you as well :)

The waiting game is the hardest part through everything in this, along with the "not knowing" game, coupled with the " omg what if..." game---try not to drive yourself too crazy.

Hi @Venice000, there were quite a few people at the NVC stage during my I-130 processing who were given RFEs because they did not write N/A in fields that did not apply to them. This was because the immigration officers would scan the applications into their system and any application with a field left blank would be rejected instantly.

However, this was three years ago, in 2014, so by all means things may be different now. As @Going through has attested, her paperwork went through just fine and therefore based on her assessment I would say USCIS systems must have improved.

I am from a South Asian country and I think it is always better to be extra careful. U.S. immigration is especially hard on people from that region and the Middle East when evaluating paperwork. I ended up manually writing N/A with a pen on all my forms, including I-751, if I couldn't type it in the form on my computer. I also filed online to avoid the hassle of continuously writing N/As and second guessing myself.

N/A or none is really for questions that stand on their own, if you know what I mean.

Silly example to explain:

1. Did you ever own a bicycle?  You would check yes or no.

1A. If you said yes, what color was your bicycle?   You would then fill in the color because you checked yes in the first question.  The second question was a sub-question.

1. Did you ever swim with sharks?  You would check yes or no.

2. How old were you when you first swam with sharks? You would fill in N/A, because even though you checked no in the first question, the second did not explicitly begin with "if you said yes...." which means it's not a sub question, but a question that stands on its own regardless of how you answered the first question.

Well, unless you did ever swim with sharks...but that's probably a whole other thread entirely :)
