Applying for a B2 visa for the first time ever... Any tips? :)

Hey guys! I'm a 28 year old female from India working in a private financial company for almost a year now. I want to visit my younger brother in Chicago (he's working on a H1B visa there). I want to visit him for about two weeks and he wants to show me around the city and go to a sporting event together. I'm also engaged but my fiance doesn't have a passport nor does he wants to travel abroad so I'll be travelling solo. We plan on getting married early next year. My dad is going to pay for my flight tickets and I'll be staying with my brother for two weeks when I'm in the US. Also I don't have another other siblings besides my brother. Can you guys please share any tips on what kind of questions the  VO might ask me and what are my chances of getting a visa? I have no intentions of living in the US as I have my fiance, my job and my parents here. Thank you :)

You have ties but you'll need to be able to demonstrate them with solid evidence. However, it might be a bit more difficult due to your brother's presence in the US and you'd be traveling as a single lady.

If $160 wouldn't set you back, go ahead and try to apply. Bring a letter to prove your employment, any evidence to show you'll indeed be returning to get married in India (example payments made to secure various bookings in English, wedding invitation card), bank account or any other assets, travel history aka international passport stamps etc.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

Hey, thanks for the response! We haven't printed any wedding invites yet.. it's far too early. As for employment evidence, will a letter of granted leave and my last few months pay stubs be enough? And I don't have any international travel history. Tbh I'm not that interested in traveling anywhere else abroad, just the US because my brother lives there.

Do you have any evidence of bookings and payments for wedding stuff? Letter of granted leave is good. Get HR to include details such as your position and duration with the company and that you'll be reporting back at work on the relevant date. Pay stubs is also good but have your bank statement with cash balance and proof of credit limit for credit card facilities to show that you can account for your own travels.

There's no specific wedding date set yet but all I know is we're going to have a court marriage sometime in March or April next year. About bank balance, I have decent amount of savings in my account and my dad is going to pay for my flight tickets.

With a B2 application, you'll need as much proofs as you can possibly gather to convince the CO that you will not abandon your ties back home nor overstay in the US. There are probably other things that you can use to prove your ties but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Perhaps wait for other VJers to chime in  :)

Haha well, would an engagement ring be good enough proof? Thanks for all your advice! :)

Honestly, a ring doesn't say much because you could have easily purchased a ring for yourself and claimed it as an engagement ring. I'm not saying that you are doing that but you gotta think like a CO and the kind of suspicion that they might have or logic that they might use :)

ps: Congrats on the future wedding!

Yeah, I totally get that it's their job to be skeptical. I plan on being completely honest so hopefully I'll be able to convince them!

And thank you!!! :)

Honesty is the best policy when applying for a visa or dealing with a consular officer :) In the event that they deny your application, be sure to listen carefully to find out why they are denying it. That way you can work towards changing those circumstances when you're re-applying in the future.

Okay guys. Also can I land at LAX airport and then take a domestic flight to Chicago? I see the tickets are much cheaper for Los Angeles.

Yes you can do that.

Do not book anything until you actually have the visa in your hand.
