N-400 Form - Change of Name

Hello Folks,

Just a little question as I am preparing for my N-400 form.

I only want to drop my middle name. Should I use the change of name field or wait until I interview and inform the USCIS officer of my preference?

I thought that I could use the change of name section by putting my name which did not change but leave the middle name box blank. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

dropping your middle name is a name change, so yes, doesn't matter what you change, the fact is you don't want your middle name

Thanks for answering!

and so typing N/A in the middle name box would be sufficient for them to understand or it would be a good idea to explain in a separate sheet?

thanks again

hi

you will review the N400 with the officer at the interview, if there is a misunderstanding you can clarify it with the officer

Dropping a middle name is considered as a name change which must be done through the court as I was told by the officer.  What had happened, I applied for a green card as a single, then later on, I got married.  So I decided to keep my maiden name but put it along with my middle name.  Big mistake,  when I went in for an interview - the officer was scolding at me for doing that.  "You can't do that!"  I was confused and said but it has been on all of my documents and no one says about it - she said no no you can't put it in your middle name, but you can add that in your surname.  I was like - my name is going to be a long on the certificate if i keep my maiden surname and my married surname and have it in my last name.  So i told her - forget it, just keep my married name - I am not going to worry about my maiden name anymore. You can take a risk and see if the officer will let it go but they may say no - you have to keep it until you do the formal name change with the court.

Remember, YOU ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE your name in your home country.
