I'm a bit confused on what documents to send to NVC. As you all know they send the cover sheet with a list of documents on them. Should I send everything that's on the list, or could someone post a link of the 2 packets that needs to be assembled and what all is required to be sent to NVC? Oh and do I need to send my husbands police report to NVC as well? Thank you :D

Just to clarify -- is this for a checklist or the IV and AOS?

I would think that you would send everything that NVC requires, if it is applicable to you.

For example, if your husband was never married before, therefore he won't need to submit marriage termination documents or even death certificates, if previous spouse had died. Also, if he was never convicted of a crime or had to appear in court, then you won't need court or prison records. The same thing for military records. If your spouse was never in the military, then documents for that is not needed.

There are 2 types of documents collected. There are financial and supporting documents. The police certificate is part of the supporting documents.

Correct, except the the police report is a "civil document" not a supporting document.  Tax returns and pay stubs are "supporting documents" to the affidavit of support, which is a required form, not simply a "financial document".

Ok I said checklist lol but it's IV and AOS

Ah, now it makes sense! Ok lemme see if I remember everything I sent off the top of my head.

AOS (My info)

  1. AOS Cover Sheet
  2. I-864 filled (all pages) and signed
  3. Joint tax returns
  4. Employment Letter/W2
  5. Divorce Decree
  6. Copy of my passport
  7. My 401 K statements (12 months)

IV (My hubby)

  1. IV Cover Sheet

  2. Copy of his birth certificate

  3. Copy of his passport (biographic pages)

  4. Copy of our marriage certificate

  5. Copy of his PCC (Police Clearance Certificate)

  6. Copy of the pages where he had his PCC stamped

Pretty much I included everything that pertained to us (divorce decree etc.) and included a cover letter which gives an itemized breakdown of what is in the package.

Just check, re-check and check again. Make sure the I-864 is filled correctly, signed and *all* the pages are included (even the blank ones)! I was obsessing over the I-864!

Here is a suggestion for you -- if you are filling the form on your computer, print it out and go through everything with a fine tooth comb. If you find a mistake, mark it (I used a red marker) and when you are done with the form, re-print and recheck again...until there are not mistakes that you can see/find.

Hope this helps a bit :)

Best of luck to you!

While your list may be helpful, it is unlikely to be the correct list for the OP, unless their circumstances match yours.  Some items on your list may not be applicable to the OP and some items not on your list may be applicable.  One item on your list, the petitioner's birth certificate, is not applicable at the NVC stage.  Most immigrant visa cases do not have "joint tax returns" to submit.  If any are joint, they are usually  joint with a former spouse.

Hence why I also said "pretty much I included everything that pertained to us".

Actually, for India, we needed my husband's birth certificate for the NVC stage and included it! As always, each country and couple has different needs and it is important to research and if in doubt contact NVC.

It's just a general admonition here that what the royal "you" did (and it worked), is often not actually what the person asking for advice needs to do.  Unfortunately, that is not always well understood by either the author or reader.  Even when the author does understand that, the reader may not.

Please go through the list that NVC has provided you and make sure that you include everything that applies to you. For example I do not have a W2 form as I am self employed, so I checked N/A and included my business license in my AOS packet.

I will say it again, before you send it, please do make sure you include *all* of the things that apply to you. :)

It would help if someone from Ghana also chimed in....

Yeah, your quote is something ;)

Sorry, not needed at the NVC stage in the context of the OP's case.  The exception is that often the petitioner's birth certificate is needed when they were NOT born in the US.  The purpose of the petitioner's birth certificate, WHEN born in the USA is as evidence of US Citizenship. (by birth).  An approved I-130 petition for the spouse of a US Citizen, is all the evidence of US Citizenship a Consular Officer needs, because that determination is up to USCIS.

The secondary purpose of the petitioner's birth certificate, US or foreign is for verification of parent names.  For some countries, this becomes important in verifying whether the couple is "related".  There's always a context that goes with every exception and without knowing the context, we don't know WHY "India folks are getting....."

When a US birth certificate is submitted with the petition, a copy is already in the file, so there would be no need to submit another copy at the NVC stage.  This is why I suspect the checklists you mention are for foreign birth certificates, not US birth certificates.  Right or no?
