F-1 (I-20) Visa from Canada to the US - needing info on taxes and medical insurance

Hello!!

I really need some help! I am leaving to the US on July 29th for school in Ohio. I have been approved for a F-1 (I-20) Visa. The college I was accepted into does not cover medical insurance and I am struggling to find out whether I need to purchase Canadian Travel insurance on top of a US medical insurance or just one or the other. Ideally I would like to get the Canadian Travel insurance, as it cost way less. Also, is a 1 Million plan enough to cover me or will 5 Million be better?

Can anyone tell me what my best options are for insurance and if only need one or the other and if I can use only the Canadian Travel insurance?

Also, I own property in Canada and will be renting out my place while I am away for the 2 years and will be keeping my bank accounts. I am not sure whether I would be considered a residency or non-residency to Canada and the process to file taxes if I am in school in the US and possible working on campus. Do I need to fill out any forms, etc to make sure I am not doing anything illegal or getting double taxed?

Thank you in advance!

You should contact the office of international students or health student services. At least the places I know offer health insurance for students. Maybe the college doesn't have a hospital so that could be why it doesn't offer any? Anyway, I'd ask because they might offer it even if they do not pay it. If this is an university with a hospital, health insurance is pretty good (at least in my experience).

I'm not sure if travel insurance works for living in the US. You should make sure it does. It probably won't cover your regular doctor check ups nor if you want to do therapy or if you have some other issue. Unless you are interested in getting something that covers emergencies and for anything else you'd go to Canada.

You can look into getting insurance in the US.

For US tax purposes, you would be a non-resident in the US. As a result, you don't have to pay for foreign income = renting a place in Canada does not have to be reported. You also have to file taxes on paper, so no electronic filing through TurboTax. Make sure you file as non-resident or you'll get in big trouble.

I am not sure about Canada/US taxes. If you are Canadian, I'm not sure you'd ever be a non-resident in Canada.
