Hey,

I am from France and I am here with a J-1 visa in NYC.

I applied for a social security card 2 months ago (march 5th) and I didn't receive my card yet.

I came back to the social security center this morning. They told me that the card has been send, they don't know why I didn't have it yet. Then they said they will send me another one and they gave me my number.

Okay, no problems, but what about the first one ? Where is it ? What happen if someone has my card and use it for work, open a bank account ..?

I said that I want to change my number, they said no. So I guess I have to wait until a bad thing happen...

What do you think I have to do ? I have a bank account that I created without my social security number, but if someone has my card, can he (theoricaly) steal my money ? Can I be refill if something like that happen ?

How can I check where my number has been used ? I tried to create an account online but they can't verify my informations and after 3 times they locked it for 24 hours...

Whatever they are not good, I'm a foreign worker, I don't know how things are working and nobody can answer my questions...

Thank you anyway

First off calm down thinking worst case scenario won't help. It could have just gotten lost in the mail, it happens.

If you have a credit card they usually have free credit monitoring, so if someone opens up an account with your ssn you'll know about it. You can also sign up for services that monitor your credit.

Where did you try to create an account? You sad it locked you out. Did you call customer service for that company?

They can't just steal your money if they had your ssn, it's not that simple. If it somehow happened, you would contact your bank and dispute it. If you legitimately didn't spend the money they will credit the money back to you. They have teams at banks that investigate fraudulent use and things like that.

Thanks for your response.

I don't have a credit card, only a debit card and I have all my savings on it so I am worried xD. But okay if they can handle this that's good.

I tried to register on the government website: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/message.html and then on a private website named lifelock. They both can't retrieve my informations, and on the government website you can only try 3 times in 24hours... Maybe I am not in the federal database yet, but it's been 2 months, or maybe it's because I didn't have received my card yet.

I will wait for the second card but I don't know what to do with the first one. If it's just lost in the mail okay, but if someone else has it, I don't like the fact that I have to wait until a bad thing happen to can change my number.

What do you advise me to do? Come back to the social security center tomorrow and ask more questions ?

Maybe they sent it too fast.

A friend of mine had requested his card a Wednesday and he got it the next Monday.

I had to wait 2-3 days for my owner to send me the mailbox key from Seattle, so maybe they sent it during that interval and there wasn't my name in the mailbox so they sent it back.

I don't know...
