Hello,

My husband is coming to the USA in the next 2 weeks. how long does it take to get a social secuirty number? Is this a process that we need to intiate or does it just come through the mail after they give you a immigration visa?

Thanks in advance!

I know with a K-1 you need to initiate it yourself at the Social Security Administrative office, but...not sure with IR-1/CR-1. My guess is yes you still do. The green card should come in the mail automatically within the next few weeks after POE, that much I know.

Mu husband checked the box that he wanted to be issued a SS number as soon as entering on his visa application, but we went to the local SS office as soon as he got here and applied anyway. Took about 6 weeks for him to receive it. They messed up his name so it took longer than usual.

It will come automatically if you checked the right boxes on the DS260.

My husband arrived in the states in March. When we filled out the DS260, we selected the box for them to process the social security number and card for us. It was mailed to our house about 5 weeks after he arrived. We did go down to the local Social Security Office at the 1 month mark to check the status since it hadn't arrived.
