Hi everyone! I am still waiting for our NOA2, but should hopefully be getting it within the next couple of weeks. My fiance doesn't have his birth certificate and as you all know, it's not the easiest to obtain in India. He will be going through the New Delhi embassy and I read on the packet 4 instructions that it gives the option of bringing school records and/or a notarized letter from a parent confirming his birth date/place/etc. He can easily bring both of those, but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with bringing secondary evidence instead of the birth certificate. Did they allow it? Did they give you any trouble or put the petition into further processing? Just want to make sure we won't run into any issues.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

TexasHeartsIndia shared a good link in this thread.  Our experience with this issue is posted there.  I would not waste time with getting anything but what is asked for: A LEGIT BIRTH CERTIFICATE.  I mean, it's worth a shot but why risk delaying things, because that is what will happen if those other in lieu docs are not accepted and you are informed of it weeks later then have to go about getting the BC anyway?

That was our experience.  It was disheartening.

I agree. He began applying for his birth certificate back in February and he still hasn't received it. I can't imagine what would have happened had he waited until now to begin the process.

Well he thought his parents had it so we didn't realize it was an issue until a few days before I posted this. Turns out it was lost somehow during their move a few years back. He was born in Delhi where he still lives and was born in 1990 so hopefully it shouldn't take outrageously long for him to get one re-issued. But we'll see! I told him not having it isn't an option because if we happen to be OK for the interview it will still be needed for other stuff. thank you all for your advice!

It will definitely work to your advantage that it was issued previously! And it helps that he lives where he was born. I doubt he'll have any problems (just be prepared to offer lots of bribes, as usual for India). Our problem is that he never had a birth certificate, so they had to register his birth, gather sssooooo much proof, etc etc. Glad you have a better situation than us! :D
