K1 Security check

Our I-129 petition was received on 21st of Nov 2016. It is now July 2017. According to USCIS a security check is pending and until they receive that they can not proceed ahead. Can anyone please tell us what his means and how long doesn't it take for such checks.

It means that they are doing a security or background check, usually for the petitioner. No one can tell you how long the security check will last. Its frustrating and all you can do is keep waiting.

Security checks and any administrative processing that's needed will take as long or as short as it takes. Days, weeks, months or years, no one can tell you for sure. There's no rushing security checks. Sorry about that.

Thanks guys, is this check normal or only certain people are subjected to it? RJandHamid , I see you guys filed your petition after us but you have already got an interview? Did you guys not have to go thru a security clearance? Thank you both for your help

To be honest, I'm not sure. I assume we underwent a security check as well, but I'm not sure how extensive. What type of visa are you petitioning for? I just noticed that your timeline is not for a K1 visa.

we have applied for a K1 fiancé visa/ I-129 .

they recieved ours on 21st of Nov 2016 

approx.one month before yours .

so once i hear bak what will happen next? Thanks

Hi, I hope you hear something soon. Security check is done for both the petitioner and the beneficiary. Certain names trigger a more in depth check than others, names that are the same or similar to names of criminals on the FBI list etc. Also, they are checking places you've travelled to, financial stuff, violation of any previous visa issued by the USA etc. There is nothing you can do but wait. If you and your fiance haven't done anything suspicious (not to mention criminal:)) there is nothing to worry about, you'll eventually get cleared. Good luck!

Once the security check is complete and the petition is approved, it will be forwarded to the NVC where it will be given a case number. You will either get an electronic notification of approval, or a letter in the mail giving you more details about the NVC stage. After a case number is assigned, it will go to the embassy in the country where the beneficiary is living.

I agree that your hold up is probably because somebody on an FBI list has the same name as you or even your parent. They have to dig deeper to make sure you are a different person. Sometimes they have to request a reply or actual records from overseas so the wait lengthens because yet another agency becomes involved. It becomes a chain of waiting.

It's  probably because I was born in Iran, I am a British citizen but I guess since Trump took over that doesn't make a difference.

That could be it. I wouldn't be surprised if extended AP after the interview comes up too, sorry. That said, extended security checks for some countries has been the case since well before the new administration took office.

I've been following London for 8 years. There has always been an embassy delay after interview to get the visa issued for those born in the Middle East, Pakistan, etc. Maybe 4-8 weeks. It has actually improved somewhat in the last few years. Not a Trump issue at the embassy stage. 

 

Not sure about the petition stage because that tends to be checking out the American to make sure an unsuspecting foreign fiancé doesn't get duped by a bad guy.

I have been visiting the US with and without visa for the past 15 years, should that speed up the clearance stage? I Did receive clearance through the London embassy last year which is still in my British 

passport for a visit to the US prior to myk1 petition.

No it will not speed it up.
