Hey guys, I have a question. Upon reading some stories about biometrics, I am kinda confused and worried. I know I have to bring an I.D., but what kind of I.D. will they accept? I have no state I.D. or any Identification with my married name on it. AND my passport is expired. I do, however, identifications from my home country that is still valid up to now BUT they're on my maiden name. What should I bring?

Question: I was reading on another thread that if you are filing an AOS from a K1 that you are often not asked to come in for an interview?

Is this true?

I know we had to prove our relationship for the K1 and my husband was asked questions about us during his interview in Sydney but I was under the assumption there would be another interview during the AOS process.

It's about a 50% chance of not having an interview if you're adjusting from a k1

Best would be if you can find a way to do a rush passport renewal. Otherwise, if you included your maiden name on the I485 (can't remember if that is mandatory, since my wife isn't changing her name) then the foreign ID should be acceptable.

That being said, I saw some reports online that they will accept an expired passport. They also stated that USCIS specifically leaves out the words valid from their website about valid documents for biometrics and leaves it up to the officer to determine if it is acceptable.

EDIT: Seeing multiple reports that the expired passport is acceptable for biometrics. In fact, it is preferred. That being said, I am seeing some people making it through biometrics OK but having issues at the interview. Most of these are old (2008-2010 era), so your experience may vary.

Since you mention it, I did have my maiden name on my I-485 forms as my middle name. Since I am from a country that does that - once the woman is married her used to be maiden name becomes her middle name automatically - I took the risk and put my maiden name as my middle name as well. I don't really want to renew my expired passport as I am waiting for EAD/AP with my married name as additional proof of my marriage so my consulate will change my surname. Top of it all, I have a feeling that my biometrics appointment will be sometime this August and renewing my expired passport is out of the question as it is nearly impossible to happen. I guess I will just bring my expired one, my marriage certificate, and some foreign I.D.s and hope for the best. Thank you.

Hi everyone. I'm a little late to the party here, but I too am a July filer. I came to the US from Canada and four months later my (now) wife and I decided to elope. We had three guests at our spur-of-the-moment wedding :)

I've been staying up to date on your timelines and wanted to share mine as well:

7/10 - Mailed Out (I-485, I-130, I-864)

7/11 - Received by USCIS Chicago Lockbox/Priority Date

7/18 - Two Texts/Emails Received

7/22 - Two NOA1s Received in the mail -- One receipt was for " I-485 fingerprint fee received" and the other was "I-130 received"

Based on everyones timelines, I imagine the biometrics appointment will be coming in the mail any day now. Anything else we should know?

Thanks a lot for all your insight and information. This is such an exciting time and it's great to have a community to share it with!

As you must have seen on the biometric appointment letter documents one can bring for ID, it's mostly government ID, be may the ID from home country or US. How is your name written on the Bio appointment letter, ID should match with it. if you don't have any take expired passport, it better than not carrying any ID

I am currently waiting on my biometrics appointment in the mail. But I got an idea on how my name would appear on the letter and that is how I filled out my I-485 forms, isn't that right? So my concern is I don't have any I.D. yet that says my married name. I am, however, will bring my foreign I.D.s to show them and my expired passport and also my marriage certificate. Thank you.
