Hi @JSWH where did you see that DDs needed to be included in AOS package? I did not see that on any checklist I found or in any of the forms' instructions. I'm in the same boat if that's the case!

Hi @lowea034, it's from I-485 (latest edition) Instructions:

"6. Marriage Certi cate and Other Proof of Relationship

...There are also some immigrant categories that require the principal applicant to submit a marriage certi cate (for example, K-1 nonimmigrants (person admitted to the United States as a ancé(e)), abused spouses and children under the Cuban Adjustment Act (CAA), Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (HRIFA) dependents, and abused spouses and children under HRIFA). See the Additional Instructions for more category-speci c information.

If either party to this marriage was previously married, you must also submit evidence to prove the legal termination of any prior marriages, typically a divorce certi cate or death certi cate. If a required marriage certi cate (or divorce certi cate or death certi cate) is unavailable or does not exist, you must demonstrate its unavailability/nonexistence and provide other acceptable evidence as explained above for birth certi cates."

Form I-485 Instructions 06/26/17 N Page 10 of 42

We got our NOA1 hard copy in the mail yesterday, 18 days after sending AOS packet.

Hey all July filers - what are you doing about health insurance during the AOS period?

If you are married and your spouse has benefits you should be able to go on their benefits immediately. Have them contact their HR ( most places allow for 30 days to do this because it is considered a life change). If this does not work you can look into the ACA plans. https://www.healthcare.gov/

We did this immediately because my husband had a last minute heart surgery right before coming to the US. Everything went smoothly and we have already followed up with a cardiologist here in the states and he already has his insurance cards in hand.

Health care coverage can be complicated. I am a health care provider and work with insurance regularly. If you look at individual plans make sure you speak with someone to understand the coverage your purchasing. Not all plans are equal :)

I will be & yes she does. Hopefully I'm able to otherwise I just can't afford it.

And whoa, glad to hear everything went smoothly, thanks for the response!

Have her contact her HR department and speak with someone. I made sure that I could declare my husband on my benefits the day after we were married and sent in our marriage certificate as soon as I had the copy. I set everything up with my HR department before we left for the wedding. I work for a large Hospital so they are required to include my spouse in my benefits. Small businesses have less restrictions on laws but it sounds like you should be all set.

I put my wife on my insurance at work. Your spouse does not need an SSN to get on to insurance, the only requirement is a legal marriage. We did have a blip where HR submitted everything, insurance had all of the forms then sat and did nothing. This finally got resolved last week and we are good to go.

Hi, did this cost you extra? My (soon to be) spouse gets money taken out of her paycheck monthly for her health insurance at work, I can't figure out whether this would mean that it would cost extra for me to be added or not.

It does cost extra but each company is completely different for the costs and what plans they offer. Your spouse will have to call HR and see how much her plan costs per a person.

For Example we have three plans that I can choose from with different coverage through my employer. My insurance cost 78 dollars a paycheck for myself and now another 78 dollars for my spouse (which is our premium plan choice) . We also have two different dental plans to choose from also (7 dollars and 13 dollars per a paycheck).

Part of the employment search in the US consists of looking at your employer benefits packages (which includes insurance coverage, vacation time, sick time (PTO), retirement plan contributions, etc). These things aren't federally regulated like they are in some countries.

It might just be delayed, but to be on the safe side you can call them, I guess. Good luck.

Thanks very much.

Her company is very small and does not really have HR and any other member of staff that would be in charge of sorting out insurance are unfortunately out until August. We will try speaking to the insurers directly for the time being.

Good luck! Hopefully it works out :) I know benefits packages and healthcare are always an interesting topic with my in-laws from Australia because everything is socialized and federally regulated in Australia. Their employers are even federally required to give at least 4 weeks of vacation. They were shocked that is not the case in the US. Luckily I have a great employer but when job searching in the US it adds another dynamic to look into some might not be aware of :)
