How's everyone doing? I still have no updates on my case which I know is still normal. Anyway, @Tcarrol Congratulations on your GC!

I am still waiting to get my biometrics letter to go and do my biometrics. If only I can get pass this hurdle , I would be less worried.

I keep getting emails saying that they are still reviewiing /no updates.  Yes I can submit an inquiry but for what?  I will simply get a 'snail mail' letter stating the same thing .

Hopefully, you're one of those people that doesn't need to get their biometrics done. I hope an actual person gets a hold of your case soon. And yes indeed, these uninformative automated emails can be annoying.

Hi Everyone,

My GC expired last year in October and I filed for I-751 status adjustment in July 2017 (90 days before expiration). I have a letter which extends my GC expiration to additional year but that will expire in October 2018. Can someone here let me know what should be my next steps? Should I raise a service inquiry? Or reach out to Senator? Or should I just go ahead start preparing to apply for US Citizenship? Or reach out to local USCIS office to get stamp on my passport for additional year? Any directions on next steps would be highly appreciated. FYI, I was not active on VJ for past 6 months or so I apologize if I missed discussions on similar topic in the past. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well it's your choice - But you have to get a stamp anyway even if you apply for the citizenship.

Not sure if senator or inquiry will help - your case is within processing times still ( 12 to 15 months currently). If you don't hear anything after 15 months, you can try asking USCIS for some update.

When is the right time window to get stamp from USCIS? The extention letter makes GC valid for another year so that will expire in October 2018. Should I get stamp in October or sooner?

Well that depends on whether or not you will be doing traveling and how busy your field office is.  If you are doing travelling then you might want to secure the stamp in July, just to ensure your documents are in order.  When does your passport expire?  If soon then you will want to have your passport reissued, then get the stamp.  If you live in a city where infopass appt are scarce, then you will need to start now in trying to get an appt.  Some say looking around midnight and very early in the morning (6-7 am) is best.  If your field office isn't busy then you should be able to have your choice of appts.  Where I live in Reno, NV you can usually get an appt 2 weeks out.  You might want to just try now and that will give you an idea of how to proceed.

I would not wait til October. IMO, that's just leaving it too late.  What if there was an emergency and you needed to return to your home country?

Some people have got their stamp 3 months prior to GC expiry date, others closer to the end.  Guess its a matter of personal comfort.  I went in Feb. to inquire about my stamp because the summer is usually really hectic, I do a fair amount of travelling to Canada and the last time I returned the CBP officer suggested I get the stamp asap.  Reno said no and to return when my GC expired....which I won't do, I will go again and hope I get another IO.  Other people have gone 3 months prior and got the stamp.

You will need to bring your passport, GC, extension letter with you.  Some IO have kept the old expired GC, some have not.  And, as a side note, be sure you scan the front and back of your GC, you will need this when you file your N-400.

Thank you so much Mrs TBH. This was really helpful, I will follow your instructions and will look into InfoPass everyday for an appointment. I am not planning to travel but just in case of an emergency it would be a smart idea to have a I-551 stamp. I will definitely scan front and back of expired green card because I am planning to apply for N-400 (naturalization) as well. If IO gives me hard time saying have to wait for extention letter to expire, I will make another appointment. Question: Is it okay to give IO my expired green card in order to get stamp? usually when you go for US citizenship oath ceremony they ask you for you green card before giving you a naturalization certificate and honestly not sure when this 10 year GC will arrive, lol.

You have a good question about giving up the 10 year GC, I haven't researched that far ahead.  Good for you for researching....maybe others can respond.

I made the appointment to see field officer in LA, Calif today. I wasn't happy with results. Basically officer told me the same when i punched in my case status on uscis website. I told him the reason I visited him today hoping for better answer. He said they are still working on cases filed in May/June 2017. At least, they are moving up since last time I asked them.

That’s Vermont. It was previously referenced as the Eastern service center.
