Question :

since we are waiting for the 10year green card and we have to get a stamp in our passport , and in some cases we give back our green card, what happens if we in process to get hired from a new employer ? Can they deny us employment because we are waiting for the green card ?

You can show your Social Security Card plus the Driver's License to your new employer which fulfills the requirement for the I9 Form. Make sure that you have got an updated SSN after your GC that shouldn't have any restrictions written on it. In that way, the question of immigration status would never come up when getting hired for your job.

Go to your nearest Social Security Administration Office with your GC and Driver's License and any prior SSN cards you may have. They will take your old SSN card (if you have one) and mail you a new one. It normally takes a week for them to mail you a new one.

Hi...

It should have been done when your green card was still within its expiration dates, so I'm afraid it may not be possible now and you would have to wait for your 10 years green card to get the restriction on your SS card removed.

it's worth to try anyway, but in most cases SS Offices don't really "read"/understand/recognize  a "combo" of an expired green card + an Extension  Letter to up-date a ss card.

I wonder how this will work for someone like me who had to surrender the expired green card for the stamp? I'll just assume it will all work fine :)

I wish they would send these faster, could save people a lot of time freaking out about getting Infopass!!

Curious.. I think I may have lost my Social Security card. Hoping it will still turn up, but so far I can't find it!

I never bothered to get an updated card after AOS, so mine always had the "With DHS Authorization" note on it. If I go for a replacement card, I wonder if they'll keep that restriction on it or not? Technically I don't have the restriction anymore, but I also don't have a current green card to bring in to ask for it to be removed..

I don't know if anyone knows the answer on this one, but curious because if it will still have the restriction on it if I replace it, I'd rather wait until I have my green card in hand so I can just deal with it in one trip.

Same here - my son's and my green cards got taken by USCIS in exchange for I-551 stamp.

So basically, they are sending out now a piece of paper which is gonna be useless for a lot of people. Such a waste of time.,.. and also it makes me worry about trees 😌 :)

P.S. Don't worry - the stamp should work just fine, for both - employment and traveling.  Not sure though how it would work in case if you apply for a new job, but for current one should be ok. BTW - I've never been asked to present anything since my conditional green card got expired... neither my son.

I'm almost positive they will issue the same card for you with the same restricted "wording"  - since  this is how your data is in the System and it has never been updated.

And now you don't have an actual valid green card to make that change possible/ restriction removed.

Well, even if you still had it i'm not sure they would remove that restriction now. I think I've seen  that an Extension Letter with an expired green card should work, but in a lot of cases they don't really do any changes without unexpired green card...

It doesn't hurt to try tough - who knows maybe your SS Office will be willing to help and also able to "read" I-551 stamp along with copy of your green card and an Extension Letter.

My wife still has her old Social Security Card.  We are waiting for the permanent Green Card to arrive  .    She has been working for 2 years ow.  her employer is part of a system that verifies Social Security numbers when she is hired so having a green card means she can work.  All these trips to the Social Security Officer are silly/   You can replace a lost card on line but that does not change what is written on it.  If you just need the actual card that's the best way

If now I'm applying for a new job , I don't have to worry about not having the actual green card in hands - with unrestricted SS card and Driver license (it was given for 7 years, till 2023) I'm good to go no matter what. And my possible new employer won't get confused with I-551 stamp, given just for a year - don't have to "educate" HR manager how immigration process works.

The same  - if i'm asked to provide work authorization for my current job. To comply with I-9.

Very often it's way easier to make a "silly" trip to SS office than to fight incompetence of  HR managers.
