I was going to try and get the I-551 stamp next week (I have an Infopass booked) but I have 5 months left on my extension letter, so that may not go over well. Still, seems like some people were able to get it with several months to go.

I have an appointment next week, and about 2.5 months to go on my extension. I'll post an update. I know every office is different, but makes me feel better to know other people's experiences!

So update on getting stamp for Boston office.

Officer said they are not giving out the stamp until 2 week prior the expiration of letter. This is their policy. My letter doesn’t expire til October but my license expires in August. She saidn’t it doesn’t matter what DMV does, this is a USCIS policy. Which is ####### because so many people get stamps way before that.  Now I will need to make sure DMV can extend with 2 months left of proof. If they do extend, I still have to go back in.

She said the reason she doesn’t give out it because people will have both letter and stamp to use.

Okay retrack what I just wrote.

I was able to renew my license online, all I need to do is put in my green card info with extension expires date (not last year on green card). The system was able to find my "residence" and just proceed me to pay $50 and give me 5 year license. So for anyone who needs to renew their license, I suggest doing it online first if you already have profile registered.

Now I just hope I get the approval before October.

I haven’t heard anything since my bio appointment last year... I did receive paperwork stating that my green card is extended until October 2018 but other than that, nothing. Is this normal?! My family is PCS’ing from Michigan to Florida next week and I don’t even know how to go about reaching out for an update. This is so stressful...

All you can do is wait. Everyone is waiting.

Don't forget to update your address with USCIS.  You can do it online. Google it.

My husband was in the same situation in Atlanta where you just can't get an InfoPass appt. He took his DL (expired this month), 2 year Green Card and extension letter (expires in September) to the DMV and for $50 they gave him a 4 month paper license and took his expiring DL. He did go to a central Atlanta DMV office where I'm sure they are dealing with a lot of this. FYI you can drive with the DL but TSA does not recognize it as a form of ID so you have to also fly with your passport or other valid ID.

Isn't it interesting how each field office has their own rules?

Humm, how can this be federal government operated but each office has its own guidelines.

Something is just plain wrong......

God bless all those who A) have to wait til 2 weeks out and B) those seeking appts at offices that are soooooooo busy.

Good luck to all of u guys!

How long did it take?  Do you have to renew or refile work authorization if your case is still pending after your 2 year GC expires?

Speaking as a federal government employee (who works in a different agency) I can tell you the individual office can tailor the rules to meet its own needs as long as it stays within Federal Guide lines.  In short if federal laws says you can get the stamp with in 30 days the individual office has the option of saying that we will give it out 10 or 15 days prior to the expiration.  There still giving the stamp but they have set there own guide lines for giving it.  Same with letting you keep the expired green card / extendtion letter , some will let you keep it as proof of prior legal admission to the USA. No reason to take it from you there not doing anything with it any more   Others will collect it s sayings its expired and the stamp in your passport is all that you need.

100% legal but can be very frustrating.

I just applied for the N-400 and now I have to deal with getting my stamp and apparently my office (Sacramento, CA) doesn't accept infopass appointments... Driver license expiring Sept. 15th. I guess I'm going to try to call them. Good luck everyone!

Just as a bit of information sharing: I had went to my local MVD to renew my license today after having received my I-551 stamp and the entire process was incredibly easy and painless.

I was surprised that the MVD worker was as knowledgeable about the I-551 stamp and the like and he had mentioned to me that (at least within my state) it is a year long training process for them before they can start working full time alone and a major component of that training deals with immigration and the various visas, stamps, etc.

All in all, I hope for those of you in our cohort that have to renew a driver's license on an I-551 stamp have as easy of a time as I did.

Hi All,

I was able to get I-551 stamp today for one more year. The Officer did not take my GC or extension letter. He also gave me an update on my case saying that the case was getting ready for the local office. However he suggested that I should apply for N400 so they will interview me for I-751 and N400 together.

Thanks

My office doesn’t accept infopass appointments as well- there wasn’t an option to call but to submit an inquiry through their website. I guess that’s what we will have to do as husbands gc expires in Aug and would like the stamp in case he needs emergency travel. Really frustrating that they aren’t accepting appointments and unsure if we should drive out of state.
