I am looking for a good English Bitter in the states.

Anyone had any luck? I am in a really small town...but I did just find Boddingtons here for the first time.

I'd love to buy it by the case for our wedding...but it looks like that might be difficult. So just simply having a few for Chris when he arrives would be nice!?

Anyone anyone?? :star:

How close are you to Durham NC? I would think with all the university people there you might have good luck finding real beer?

Boddingtons and good English Bitter.

In the same sentence??????????????????

I am guessing that canned will do and certainly where I am that is widely available from the Liquor Stores.

The Brew Pubs vary, usually the American Pale Ale is closest, the IPA's tend to be far too strong.

No no...just mentioning that I actually found Boddingtons in this town...it wasn't here last week.

I drink guinness and I can find that anywhere.

MyBack:nope..not close to Durham...We have a few specialty beer stores. But I am looking for some names of some good Bitters so I know what to look for!

I love IPAs....but this is for him :)

My local offie has Adnams, I am in a town of 1500.

But my guess is that we are looking at beer in a bar setting.

There is a web site for US brew pubs, just do not have the link.

Most regions have a newspaper specialising in the brew pubs, I know there is one in Delaware, usually available at your local brew pub as a freebie.

Just don't be tempted by the Samuel Smith's. Its ####### and nobody in England has heard of it unless you come from a particular small area of Yorkshire.

The problem is that Bitter just doesn't travel well, so usually it doesn't taste any good outside of the UK. The stuff they put in bottles just isn't the same IMHO, which is why I stick to American beers personally.

However ,y local beer distributer has Theakstons Old Peculiar, which I can highly recommend as a rare example of a bottled English beer which tastes good in the USA.

Guinness and Newkies seem to be everywhere in PA. I can't seem to find Tennants. Even the (and I use the term broadly) "British Pub" in Carlisle that has Tennants on the menu, never has it in stock.

Guinness and New Castles are everywhere!

I will probably end up getting New Castle for the wedding only because it is a decent price and most people like it. That and something domestic lightish....

A good bitter is one thing that Chris really misses here.

In Nashville I normally can get a pretty good selection of Uk beers...maybe I will have to just go visit there and bring loads back!

Ya'll are awesome...

So to add to the thread...what are your favorite beers?? Either stateside or otherwise?

Hubby loves Guinness. Me? I'm not a beer/bitter/lager lover. I'll will drink the Maltese beer though, it is called Cisk and is quite tasty. But that's about my limit. Give me a glass of wine or some voddy and coke and I'm a happy camper! ;)

My favorite beers are: Harp - which I've always loved, but is even more special now since I met Griff for the first time while drinking pints of Harp. I also like Stella Artois and for any "everyday" been I prefer Molson Canadian Light.

IMHO, the best American "British" style beer you can get is Firestone Double Barrel Ale. However unless you live in Southern California, its probably not going to be in your local store. Honestly I'd love to recommend beers, but it all comes down to where you live and what's available.
