Hey everyone!

My fiancé and I just got married and I'm not starting the Adjustment of Staus process. It's says that I need my birth certificate in English, but I gave up my birth certificate at the embassy when I had my interview. It was probably in the sealed envelope/package I received in the mail from the embassy, the one that I gave to the officer at the port of entry to the US. I remember the officer mentioned something about them keeping the documents for my process.

Does anyone know if I can ask them for my birth certificate, or do I have to apply for a new one in my home country (Norway) and have my family send it to me?

Originals shouldn't be submitted unless asked. The sealed envelope is just your medical record. Your original birth certificate is probably stuck in your case file. Unlikely to get the old one back easily.

Might be a good idea to apply for a new one. This time just send in a photocopy for any applications.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

The sealed envelope we all get with the passport is indeed our case file and should hold every paper submitted so far, the whole casefile.

it is unlikely though they would give back anything but one certainly can ask - it will take very long and is not worth the waiting imho

op, it's best that you ask for another copy of the birth certificate and its translation if needed. Then you take copies of those and submit the copies on your aos packet

The whole case file? :o I might have to suffer carrying mine then because it was very thick :jest:

You usually get most of the bonafide ####### back, like printed chatlogs, facebook messages etc. They didn't even keep any of my photos or the divorce decree at the interview (they might've copied it though, I wouldn't know). The sealed envelope contains most other things though, not just your medical. So yeah, it's pretty thick, meaning it's hard to lose which is a good thing.. :P

And for future reference: Never move to America without certified copies of your birth certificate in your suitcase, they WILL be needed. ^_^

Obviously BCs are harder to get from certain countries once you've moved abroad, but I bet Norway is an easy one, so you're lucky.

Thank you so much for sharing the info with me. Somehow, I kept thinking it's just the medical because of the x-ray film :bonk:

I made copies of the original BC and ordered multiple copies of the translated version. So do I get both the untranslated copies and translated copies certified? Should I get them certified in my home country or the US? And who should I ask to certify them anyway? :help: Sorry, I'm just very anxious now. Prepping stuff for the upcoming interview.

I have never had anything translated, I don't know how these things work in your country and I have never had a birth certificate myself. So I'm sorry I can't answer your questions. :(

It's OK. I think back home I can go to the Foreign Ministry to certify them. I shall find out

I certified 4 copies of my birth certificate with La Hague Apostille already.

What I'll do later on, before moving to the States, is getting a translation of the certified birth certificate by a sworn translator. I'll check with them to see how they work, but I assume if the translation is from a certified copy, then that will be stated somehow and the translation itself will be good enough.

That's very good :) Thank you for sharing. I've contacted my country's Foreign Ministry because it looks like they do certify Malaysian government documents.
