Should I exchange Pesos for USD at airport in US?

I have about 12,000 Philippine Pesos I'd like to convert back to USD. Will I take a loss if I convert them at an airport in the US? What's my best option here?

You will probably find a better rate in the airport than somewhere else, so ahead and do it. You will probably end up with alittle more than $200 after they take their cut.

Agreed, you will most likely get the best rate at the airport for an exchange.  I know we are doing more with just using bank machines when we travel internationally as opposed to exchanging money anywhere, but not sure if that is an option for you.

To change money inside the US, unless you are in NYC or something like that, it can be very hard (except for euros or Mexican pesos).  You would need to have a bank account and then, do the exchange with them but there is an exchange fee and their exchange rate is not always the best. It also takes a few days. 

 

So I agree with the others. It is best to change at the airport.

When "buying" USD with pesos this is when the high number posted on exchange websites come into play as that is the cost.  So it takes more pesos to buy the dollar.  At this moment it takes 50.47 pesos to buy a dollar.     Some exchange services may pad the cost further...

At this moment,  P12,000 = $237.78     

 

To buy pesos with a USD it is reversed, subtract roughly 1 pesos from prime

 

 

Not sure where is a good place to exchange pesos for dollars, I always keep my pesos.   I know I can do it at our bank here, but we have an account.

You will take a BIG hit  if you change pesos to USD at an American airport....if you can change money at a Philippine airport before you leave the loss is minimal!!

Do you know if you can change Pesos for USD at the airport in Manila? (Terminal 1)

 

Also, just a thought. What about changing at Western Union in the Philippines?

Yes ..I am 100% sure you can change pesos back to US dollars at terminal 1.. 

i do it all the time as recently as May...and many times through the years...

 

usually take a 1-2 peso hit in MNL as opposed to 4-7 peso hit at a US airport .

they actually give the best exchange rate at the airport as opposed to WU...

 

just remember to change money back as soon as you get in terminal before you check in or go thru immigration check as there are no banks once you are inside gate area...

 

I've  changed money from PESOS TO US dollars at all 4 terminals at MNL and vice versa

I'm worried the bank at the airport won't be open because my departure flight is at 4:55am (Manila Terminal 1). Should I go to the airport the day before during daytime hours to change Pesos for USD?

Ahhh...I do not know when they open or close....I have used them up until 11 pm. But never flown out that early....BUT, On my last trip my incoming flight was delayed so I didn't arrive to terminal 1 until 2am and they were open on arrivals .....

Thanks for that info. Worst case scenario I can just go the day before in case they won't be open by that time.

I would just leave the money with your fiancé.  The exchange rate back here is so bad when you go through TravelEx (airport exchange).  12,000 pesos is really worth much more there than here.
