Pardon me, and I hope the OP has found the information he/she was seeking.

I just wanted to comment on this name "Breach Candy", which strikes me as one of the oddest, apparently-English place names I have ever seen. Does anyone know the origin of this name? Is it actually a Hindi name that just looks English?

This thread is the second place I have seen it in a matter of days, after not having seen it my whole life before now. I am reading Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry and it is in there, too.

Thanks for any insight anyone has. Hope no one minds me borrowing this thread to ask...

Hi Maya I have been curious about the name too. I did a quick Google search and came accross a blog that mentions it (talking about another place), it is all I can offer until someone else answers:

http://strayingaround.blogspot.com/search?q=breach+candy

Pydhonie: It is known as Pydhonie as it was located the tip of the creek at Umarkhadi where the sea water (through the Great Breach, now called Breach Candy) used to touch and therefore called Pydhonie or ‘foot wash ‘. Pay means feet and Dhoni means wash. As Gillian Tindall rightly says, “It is probably the best part of three hundred years since anyone had the opportunity to wash his feet at this dusty cross-roads”. Pydhonie is a busy commercial area, which is located near Kalbadevi, and Mumbadevi (patron goddess of Mumbai) temple is located here.

I always assumed that it was a name that came down from the British Raj... just like 'Calcutta' and 'Bombay'.

Pardon me, and I hope the OP has found the information he/she was seeking.

From what I have heard from friends, Breach Candy is one of the worst among the 3 hospital in the Mumbai list. First the hsopital is tiny, you have to sit outside (in shade), but with the Mumbai heat and humidity it soon becomes unbearable. Also most of the staff is impolite.

MEDICAL COMPLETED !@!!

STAFF WAS VERY NICE TO HER

Shosurplussales,

Can you post your wife's expereince at Breach Candy? My wife will be going there for her medical on the 22nd of May. I want to let her know what to expect.

On another topic, I see you are from the Atlanta area. Have you booked the flight for your wife? Will she be coming directly to Atlanta to clear immigration? If you have booked your flight already, how much did you pay for the ticket?

My wife will be coming to Charlotte, and looks like she'll be getting the Delta flight to Atlanta and then on to Charlotte.

Thanks and good luck for the interview.
