The HMRC robot informed me that it takes them 3 weeks now to process this tax refund request so they cannot give me any information until 9 September. I will be in the US by then so I'll have to call from there.

But I was wondering for people who applied at least 6 weeks ago for this how did it go? Anybody have experience with this recently?

Just to give you guys an update regarding tax refund from form P85, I got my taxes back in about 6 weeks after I sent in the forms.

Why would a tax refund be income?

Foreign bank accounts are only reported when the sum of all balances exceed $10k in any given year.

We don't know how much he has in his UK bank account......

UK tax refund... I suppose it would not be.

HMRC sent me a check. It was fun getting it paid into a US bank.

It's how you tell the HMRC you are leaving to UK to live abroad so they know you won't be filing a UK income tax return once you leave. They calculate if you have paid in an excess in the current or past tax years and send you a refund.

Pro: Get some money

Con: ??

The one con that I can think of would be during the same tax year as you submit the P85. In particular, if you earn some money from a UK employer after you submit the P85 then there might be some paperwork that needs filling in to either i) get you back onto the right tax code for the UK employer, or ii) for HMRC to expect a tax return from you. However, I envisage that such a scenario wouldn't really be too common for family-based visas (it'd probably depend on individual circumstances for a work-based visa).
