Give it a shot, but I personally think EAD card is a guaranty  hit with DMV and State ID

tried in NC but no avail. Best to wait for EAD/GC..

Most states won't accept it. Their claims is "that is not an immigration status yet"

My wife was able to by showing her I-94, along with the other required documents (passport, proof of residence). However, it expires on the I-94 expiration date. They said once it's expired, she can renew it once she gets the EAD. This is in Illinois, though.

According to there website they do.

Problem is that it requires the person to actually look up the correct entries for the SAVE system.

When I got mine I got the same response. only after I asked them to look it up, since it was on there own documents as being an option, did the lady ####### the book and started looking. Sure enough the "Well, what do you know. You're right" was said after about 30 seconds.

That's how it works in California too, but you must have at least 60 days left on your i-94 or else they won't give you one. It would only be valid as long as your i-94 is so I saw no point in getting one back then, I would just have to go there again and pay again once my EAD showed up to have it renewed anyway, which made no sense.

Agreed. Technically a person is not a resident yet.

I totally agree, you will be wasting money, the EAD might just be 90-days way....some even arrive before that time.

This is what I've done...

Am in Ohio and i went to the bureau of motor vehicles (BMV) for a Temp Driver's license or State ID. I had to show them my passport with visa, I-94, SSN, Marriage License(on that date we still didnt get married so I only had Marriage License), International Driving Permit (I got mine from india) and i had to do the on-line driving skills test (took about 20 minutes) and then i got my Ohio Temp Driving License card all in 60 minutes.

I only faced one issue with them. I didnt have a valid US mail address. I live with my wife and her parents and since the lease agreement is on my wife's and her father's name so I went to the nearest Walmart and purchased a Fishing and Hunting license for the same address am living with my wife and her parents... for about $19 ($11 for one day and $19 for one year) and that actually is an approved proof of address by BMV. Again, i think it differs from state to state. Hope this helps you.

Smart moves with the fishing and hunting license. I guess reading about other people's experience gives you more scope on how to navigate the complex structure of American Systems. In some state, with your valid visa, other documents, you can get a DL until the last date of your Visa.
