I didn't use a lawyer, but it's nice to have a second set of eyes review your documents prior to sending it in.

This topic comes up a lot.  If you are comfortable with following government instructions and filling out forms and you have a relatively easy case (no past legal or immigration issues), in general you can do the K1 and other processes (AOS, ROC, N400) yourself.  You need to remember that even with hiring a lawyer you will still be doing the majority of the work relative to gathering information and reviewing their work (never assume that a lawyer does not make mistakes).  In the end, it is a personal decision whether to use a lawyer or not.  One piece of advice if you do choose a lawyer, make sure you shop around (check reviews) to find a good immigration lawyer, and steer clear of any lawyer claiming they can speed up the process.

Good Luck!

It looks like rapid visa is cheaper than lawyer n this will give me a 2nd pair of eyes on my documents. Has anyone used? I know it doesn't make it faster but again a 2nd pair of eyes.

Any comments?

Stephanie, did you feel rapidvisa was a good? I am really considering but wasn't sure due to governmental thoughts about Nigeria. Not sure where your husband is from in Africa. My mind is spinning n I want to make the smartest decision. I know there is no 100 guartnee using either a lawyer or rapid visa. Just wanted to get your full opinion. Thank you and God bless you.

Honestly i see no point in paying anyone to do this process. If you can read and write in english why have someone else fill out the forms? I googled any question that I was unsure of how to answer. It took a little longer but its much more simple than it seems.

Your wasting your time and MONEY on using a 2nd service like RapidVisa. Bill & Katya gave you the best answer to your question. Most of us out here have done our own with the help of the VJ community.  There are good guides here on the K1 process that you can follow to start but once approved from USCIS then go to your country's forum for more exacting answers to those questions that maybe country specific and the next process. Each country after the visa application has been approved by be different. http://www.visajourney.com/content/guides/

Here is a thread that I followed for a very long time as many there were going through the K1 process and one fellow "Jamie" was processing through Nigeria. He left a lot of information on the steps that he took to get approved. Nigeria is a very difficult country to get a visa from so you may want to take a read.  He did get approved but he was very ####### about the details as he didn't want to fail or be delayed.

Going to be frank here: Don't get a lawyer. Don't use a service. Do it yourself.

The steps are really not difficult to follow. Make sure you read over everything multiple times and if you have questions, look for help in places like this. You shouldn't be worried about getting it wrong and being automatically denied.

The only time I've seen people get denied is in extreme causes where someone is inadmissible or looks like they're trying to commit fraud. (Typically lying on the form and getting caught)

For everyone else, filling out the documents wrong or missing a line or signature simply gets you a "Request for Evidence". They explain it very clearly on what is needed and how you can fix it. If you still don't fix it, they will typically send a second RFE.

The fact that they aren't going to punish you or automatically deny you for simply getting something wrong is what should convince you to do it on your own.

From personal experience in fact, when we sent in our I-129F, the lockbox location sent it back (with our fee in full) telling us about a missing signature. We sent it in after fixing it and got another RFE (official this time) for some missing evidence. All in all it only delayed things only about 2 weeks.
