You may qualify to participate in NEXUS if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the U.S. and have lived in one of these countries continuously for the last three years.

So does this mean new residents don't qualify because we haven't lived in the US continuously for three years?

No... you have to live in either Canada, the US or a combination of both for the past 3 years... If that was the case, then my wife would never have gotten one...

I had thought about NEXUS, zyggy, and the only reason I don't have it, is that I usually cross after the NEXUS lanes are closed for the evening.

Neiks,

Because of my incident, do you think a "visitor's record" was issued to me? They didn't say anything of the sort to me. I was merely allowed on my way after the interrogation was completed. The next time I am crossing into Canada will once again be in Edmonton, not Vancouver, so will that make a difference? Will they know about my crossing into Vancouver last year? Will that affect my ability to make it into Canada this summer? Once again, I was fully allowed into Canada -- I didn't break any laws. I was just questioned a whole heck of a lot

Visitor records are not always issued. In the larger ports they may not bother as they probably just don't have the time or manpower. I tend to put a person on a visitor record for the fact that if I think it helps the person out in the future or in the long run as it is the only record of their situtation and shows that the person has enter Canada and has exited Canada (when the VR is returned to the office) and is following regulations.

I wonder how much this has to do with the POE and the mood of the CBP (no offense Neiks).
This is true and I work with a few of these officers that can more often than not in a "foul" mood. Not to justify complete rudeness but the fact is that our job is to question people to find out who is telling the truth from those that are trying to "pull one over".

I absolutely recommend the NEXUS pass. Both my fiance and I just got ours - it's $80 well spent (US$50). It was a bit of a pain for my fiance to get as he lives in Las Vegas but it worked out that he was in Vancouver when they needed to interview him. You cannot do email or phone interviews as your fingerprint & photo must be taken, as well as the iris scan, of course. The Nexus card is valid for 5 years.

In hindsight, my fiance probably didn't need to spend the money on Nexus as I am the one who does most of the travelling (right now it's once a month) but it sure will make things easier when he does visit.

We have not started the immigration process yet as I am waiting for a divorce, but I know I would be questioned on why I visit the US so often if I had to speak to an officer every time I crossed the border. It sure is nice to bypass all the line-ups!!

Since my fiance is going through the immigration process, would they even allow him to get such a pass? I don't know if "intended immigrant" status would affect being able to get a pass.

I have a nexus card and thank the lord! I live about 10 miles from my US fiance and go over to the US every weekend. Rarely a question and I have been pulled into secondary twice now and it's usually just for nexus compliance, at least that's what the little form says. They take my passport, search the car, wonder off, come back, ask how long I'm staying and tell me to have a nice day. I always say I'm visiting my fiance. The only time we get extra questions is when we're coming back to canada together in his vehicle for a family function. Canada side we rarely get an eye batted at us. US side they usually ask the normal how long I'm staying, where do I live/work. I think my job saves my butt most of the time. He doesn't have nexus as we figured it was a waste of money since I'm always going over there. When I applied for nexus they asked why I wanted it and I wrote right on the form to visit my 'boyfriend' which he was at the time. I'm hoping my nexus record will help when we start the immigration process as it will show entries into the US every friday, showing that I do in fact go 'home' to Canada during the week. That and I've already been cleared through homeland security, FBI and RCMP to get the card and they have my finger prints.

Just wanted to add my experience :)
