I have been a law abiding green card holder for 36 years.  Being from Canada, there was no pressing need to pursue citizenship, unless I wanted to vote or serve in a jury.  The last two federal election cycles instilled in me a desire to vote for the first time in my life.  I sent my N-400 app off Jan 27, 17.  The Travel Ban happened during the last weekend  of January 2017.  Green Card holders were initially affected; with some being refused re-entry to the US.  I was so glad to have started the process!   Every immigrant I talked to with a Green Card said they were frightened by the Ban . I like to travel; am a home-owner,  and do not want to be held for questioning when I want to enter the US.

Did the Travel Ban affect you in any way?

The travel ban affected people with citizenship in 7 (now 6) specific countries. I assume you don't have a citizenship from either of those so why are you worried?

I'm Canadian as well....GC holder for 12 years.

It did affect me, in the sense that it made me finally get off my butt and apply for naturalization last month.   With the changing immigration/travel policies coming into play I figured I didn't want to take the chance of ever being affected in the future travelling or residing in the US as a GC holder, and wanted to make sure that my legal status would be more "secured" (in my mind).

Until that all happened, I was initially planning on just renewing my GC for another 10 years as well.

A travel ban can also affect those who have families in those countries in terms of travelling and visiting them, when returning to the States as the GC holder may now face extra scrutiny.

Travelling to some of those countries could add extra scrutiny already before Trump though.

You missed my point I think.  I was responding to where you'd inferred the only people affected by the travel ban were citizens of the banned countries, and shouldn't affect the OP because he's not a citizen of those countries.  My point is that it doesn't affect only their citizens but can also affect US-residing relatives.

I guess I just don't think that questioning at the border before being let into the country is a big deal. There are people that are REALLY affected by this, not just some extra questioning at the border. It's funny how there are way more westerners being worried that they will be affected by this than the people from the countries that actually have some kind of travel ban. I mean, put the "questioning at the border" in contrast with the struggle for the people from those specific countries..

Who said that anyone was discounting the struggles of those people living there?

I think us Westerners get worried too because we tend to travel more frequently and more widely.

I've never been comfortable being questioned as a LPR when coming back to the States...from anywhere.  I understand it needs to be done, but I don't understand why as a legal resident, at the border I have to appeal to them for "re-entry" as they put it...it's not "re-entry" it's "coming home" in my eyes.  And even being a GC holder, doesn't guarantee you the right to enter either since it's still up to the discretion of the border agent.  Another reason why I decided to finally move towards citizenship, by the way...

If I had family/citizenship in one of the countries that are affected by the travel ban and resided in the States, it would stress me out even more when returning from any country, not just the ones on the ban list.

Because they were also giving Canadians extra scrutiny, from what I saw on-line and on TV. Canada said it would welcome immigrants from those countries; and it could have gotten nasty.  I applied the Day Before the Travel Ban.    Plus, green card holders from the affected countries should not have been denied re-entry, it gave the impression that the Green-card was no protection or guarantee of being allowed to re-enter the US, no matter what your citizenship.  I am an owner of a paid off home, what would I do if not allowed to re-enter?  It made people think about their status and be nervous even if you weren't from those countries. I was one of them.  I am now awaiting my Oath Ceremony!

I had just renewed my Green card and I am good until 2025,  I understand why you applied. My cousin from Canada did the same thing in February and she is awaiting her Oath.Ceremony too

Yeah I made the decision only about a week before the 6-month expiration deadline (had to by then so I could avoid paying the extra fee to renew my GC if I needed to travel while my N400 was pending and my GC expires before approval.)

Ive heard that they wanted to cap the incoming numbers at 500k over the course of 10 years (no link avail.) This article mentions incoming refugees capped at 50k per year.. Is it possible that numbers I heard previously are related to refugees?

This whole thing is concerning to me considering I have a K1 visa in progress. If anyone has any clarity to this whole thing, please do share..

Thanks in advance..

No worries right now.  Even if it passes, and that is a VERY long shot, it will be implemented for many years from now.  There are a few huge discussions over in the General Discussion Area.
