This article from National Review says:

"Immigrants would be scored on a scale of zero to 100, though in practice it’s more like a scale of zero to 45 — someone with a perfect score would need a Nobel Prize (25 points), an Olympic medal (15), and $1.8 million invested in a business (12), for instance. More typically, potential immigrants would be scored based on their level of education, their English fluency, their age (with ten points for those 26 to 30 and zero points for those 50 and up), and the salary they’ve been offered (with 13 points for compensation at least triple the median salary of the state where the job is located, and no points for an offer less than 50 percent above the median). Importantly, if an applicant wished to bring a spouse, the spouse’s education, age, and language skills would count for 30 percent of a combined score. Those without at least 30 points would be ineligible, and ties would be broken by (in descending order) education, language, and age. Immigrants admitted through the point system would be ineligible for welfare benefits for five years."

But I still don't understand this, how this effect current visas? To get the E2 visa, which doesn't lead to a green card, would you need to hav enough points to get the E2 visa to this point based system not apply to the E2 visa?

I don't think this would affect the current visas, it may be for new applicants? idk -_-

This one sticks out to me.  Considering foreign education would have to then be the American-equivalent in terms of degrees, certifications or diplomas received to be properly rated, right?

I've met many people who were prior teachers/engineers/etc. in their home countries that are now working level-entry jobs.  All because their qualifications "don't meet American standards" when looking for work related to their prior field.

Stephen Miller just said in the White House press briefing that this bill "doesn't deal with guest workers and temporary non-immigrant visas."

I've been asking here about the E2 visa. Isn't this visa regarded as a temporary non-immigrant visa? So the points based system wouldn't affect the E2 visa then would it?

Doubtful as this is about those who would be immigrating permanently

We ALL have a new concern now.

President Trump is asking for legislation that will SUBSTANTIALLY change our immigration rules.

It is meant to implement a skills based system requiring English skills, education, work skills and ability to earn an income in place of family considerations.

Specifically targeted are 'chain immigration' wherein family members come in based on family ties.

This is exactly  what most of us are relying on when we bring spouses into USA.

At the very least, our processes will be slowed and delayed even more as this legislation unfolds and is debated, etc.

Does not effect Spouses.

Immigration Reform is hardly new, been on the agenda for decades.

At least for STEM degrees, ABET accreditation should count. Other professions may have similar accreditation bodies. When I applied to grad schools in US 15 years ago I had to take TOEFL and GRE exams, send transcripts, reference letters, etc. They would find a way one way or other.

Even if it does, many of our peer nations have stricter rules regarding spouse immigrations.  Some of them have higher income levels with no co-sponsors, some have housing size requirements, or minimum ages.  This is within the purview of a government to define and it might be about time.   How many times have we seen K1s (or lesser so CR1s) come to the country and not have money to adjust or the spouse having any means to provide for them during the transition?

In my opinion, these are wise changes if they are coming.

Immigration shouldn't be just for the rich but you have a point.  However, I do believe that if the intended immigrant has a significantly marketable education and career, that should be taken into account with the I-864

It takes more than a day to implement something like this.  Relax, encourage her to learn the language and continue on

I just saw on Shepard Smiths Fox News show that Republican senators Ron Johnson and Lindsay Graham have already voiced disapproval regarding this bill...

and this bill would need 60 votes in the senate.

the statements our president had made in the past about immigration and ethnic groups, I highly doubt the intention/motive of this administration when it comes to changing immigration laws.

then you have people like steve bannon and stephen miller alongside the president
