the legislation would move the United States to a "merit-based" immigration system and away from the current model, which is largely based on family ties.

The legislation faces an uphill battle in the Senate, however, where it’s expected to get pushback from Democrats as well as GOP senators who oppose strict limits on legal immigration

If Cotton and Perdue can get GOP leadership to bring the legislation up for a vote, supporters will need to cobble together 60 senators, including at least eight Democrats or independents, to agree to start debate on the legislation.

I just saw on all mass media and alternative news that trump is now implementing a new 'Merit Based' immigration system - much like Australia and Canada. Would this interfere (effect) K1s? Since k1 holders can NOT work until authorized (temp card or green card), how would this (if any) impact k1 filers?

 

Is this only for work visa (and possible family or CR visa's?

 

Anyone have any thoughts??

Yes.  It's unlikely to happen at least not soon.  Those are my thoughts

It is a real long shot to pass but it sure doesn't make my K-1 wait any more comfortable.  There is talk that all immigration can be halted until congress and the courts weigh in on this.  I pray that isn't true.

I sure hope not but that is what happened with the restrictions that the President placed on the 7 Arab countries.  There was a complete halt while the issue was in the courts

That's far different from halting all immigration.

Has anyone mentioned to him that GC holders tend to work after getting an EAD, pay US taxes, then become citizens...continuing to work and pay taxes which protects the economy?

 

If the new regulations are based off of the country making money, he should get a load of how much USCIS makes off of applicant fees a year.

I was only talking about family based immigration.  That is .4 % of all visa activity.  They couldn't stop all but family based is a very small part of the picture

From what I understand, he's more focused on work visas than family based visas. And I'm sort of okay with the point system, Japan has it. Canada has it. Australia and New Zealand. It's not like it's a newly developed method of immigration.

True.  It was announced and it was also cut down almost immediately.  In April when the HB visas were given priority over family based we should have known this was coming.  The processing times on HB have been considerably cut while the processing time on the family based has greatly increased.  There is a switch already implemented giving business based priority over family based.  It is not unreasonable to think this is all related.
