From Politico so take it with a grain of salt, though I think they're one of the better political news organisations these days.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/12/trump-legal-immigration-cuts-240478

  • Would shift the US immigration system away from family-based to merit-based (similar to Canada and Australia)
  • Green cards and citizenship to be limited "to those who pay taxes and earn higher wages"
  • DACA might be in the firing line too

Surprised DACA is still around https://www.shusterman.com/10-states-to-trump-end-daca-or-well-sue-you/

Although many people see President Trump as the most anti-immigrant President in recent history, to others, he is not anti-immigrant enough.

In a memo issued on June 15, 2017, DHS Secretary John Kelley rescinded the Obama Administration’s memorandum expanding the DACA program and creating the DAPA program for certain parents of US citizens. However, the memo declared that the original DACA program created in 2012 for children who were brought to the US at a young age by their parents "will remain in place".

On June 29, the Attorneys General of Texas and 9 other states (Arkansas, Alabama, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia) sent a letter to US Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatening to bring an action in Federal Court to declare that the DACA program is unconstitutional unless the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) phases out the program.

The letter demands that DHS rescind the 2012 memorandum which created DACA, and not renew or issue any DACA permits in the future. If DHS does so by September 5, the letter states that the plaintiffs will voluntarily dismiss their lawsuit.

Not much in the way of detail, refocusing the system had been talked about as long as I have been here.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Posted

A popular theory is that this administration won't end DACA themselves, but they'll let that referenced lawsuit proceed and just won't defend it, giving them a plausible defence (paper thin, but I guess it's there) that technically it wasn't them that ended DACA it was the courts.

The fact that Trump hasn't ended DACA already, when he said it would be done on "day 1" of his term, is surprising. He actually seemed to show genuine compassion and understanding for once. No doubt the whisperers in his ear have been working on him these few months, to where he's shifting off to the right once more.

A mini-thread in the US Immigration News forum has been moved to General Immigration Discussion and merged with the mega-thread.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It appears Trump is going to announce some immigration proposals today.

http://politics.blog.ajc.com/2017/08/01/perdues-legal-immigration-overhaul-to-get-white-house-rollout/

- Green card lottery to be abandoned

- Several family preference categories may be eliminated, including F2B and F4.

This will not make it past the senate.

Also:

"The legislation would have nixed immigration preferences for nonimmediate family members, adult children or adult parents of current legal permanent U.S. residents. It ultimately stalled in the Senate."

so they're planning on killing something that doesn't exist?

I don't think this is the same bill. I think it will have some of the things that was in the old bill but with new additions.

You seem pretty certain this bill won't make it past the senate. Are you sure about that?

I'm pretty confident. They have tried before and not succeeded.  Right now they'd need Democratic support for it to pass and to be honest, unless it's an exchange for something like DACA, I do not see a single democrat voting for it.

I recently read this article and found out that new immigration bill is going to be introduced soon!! It will mostly based on merits and it plans to cut legal immigration by half.. anyone know what's exactly it means?? And who will be effected?

Quote

"Their bill would do three things: First, limit the number of foreign nationals who are able to get green cards to reunite with their families already in the U.S. — currently the largest category of legal immigrants; second, cut the number of refugees in half; third, eliminate the diversity visa lottery — a program that gives visas to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
"Cotton says the number of green cards awarded each year — about a million — is excessive.
" 'In one year, this would reduce it to around 600,000,' Cotton says. 'Over the span of the 10-year window it would fall to about 500,000.' "

From the small amount I've read so far,

1) Limit the number green cards issued to foreign nationals who wish to reunite with their families in the U.S.
2) Cut the number of refugees by 50%
3) End the diversity (countries with low rates of immigration) visa lottery
