For those things they can ask if you are above a certain age. The legally cannot ask your age during the hiring process. But when you are hired they certainly can ask your date of birth. Many reasons; insurance, background check, identification of the employee, certain employer benefits are tied to age of employees, proof for the employer that they are not discriminating.

this.

you can hide your age while applying for the position but once it is offered they may need you to give them information for legitimate reasons and refusing to do so could give them reason to withdraw the offer since they might not want to deal with someone who is being overly difficult or evasive.

I received a job offer.Since I'm a Canadian citizen, they want to see my  driver license and US passport.I have both and dont have any problem showing them but I do have   a problem showing my birthday and age.Do I have to provide my birthday?is it mandatory?what can I do so I can provide them the two ID they want to see but not my age..

Thnx

If you are so concerned about someone knowing your age maybe just take photocopies of these documents and show them.. but chances are they will need your birth date for benefits/payroll purposes. I work in an office and our system will not allow us to create an employee profile without date of birth.. if we enter something shy of 18 yrs old (legal age in my province) than certain benefits will not calculate. Also someone made a good point regarding life insurance or retirement savings plans etc. Please note that your social insurance/social security is more more sensitive than your age and i am assured you are providing that information. I personally think it would be hard not to provide that information, but it is for sure to remain confidential.
