It's not standard practice to take away the passport. I had my interview last week and I showed both my previous and current French passports. Interviewer promptly gave both back to me. I also doubt they would do it to just Philippine passports.

You are right!

my husband did his citizenship in 2012 and the IO asked for his passport, he had two expired ones and one current at the time, he just looked at them and handed them back to him.

Bring your expired Philippines passport to the interview.  They will take it from you because you will be becoming a US citizen.  They took my wife's saying,"You won't need this anymore as you are renouncing your Philippines citizenship."  Hers what not expired but they took it.

What? Seriously? I find his very strange.

I don't know about you and your case.  I was merely sharing our experience with a Philippines passport.  What happened to you does not change what happened to us and is irrelevant.    Homeland Security in Honolulu Hawaii took my wife's Philippines passport as she/we entered the room for her oath ceremony.  (Her passport was valid at the time) saying she wouldn't need it anymore.  End of story.

Geez, why do you get all offended and defensive? We just find it very strange, that's all. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I concur. I had my interview recently; the IO asked for my passport, looked at all the US admitted stamps (I went out of the country 10 times in the last 5 years) then gave it right back (it expires next year). I can't imagine how any immigration officer could "confiscate" a passport from another country (other than having been notified by that country that that particular passport was reported lost/stolen or something like that). I just find it very strange. Hard to believe, really.

Technically, a passport remains the property of the issuing government, not the passport holder. So it would be highly improper and possibly illegal for a US government official to arbitrarily seize a foreign passport.

I had my interview last month with an expired passport. The IO asked for my  2 expired passports, looked at both checked for travel dates and the stamps, then gave it right back .

My oath ceremony is in july.IO saw that my driver's license and green card were also expiring in  june before my oath ceremony. You need one of these identification for judicial ceremony ,she even asked me to come to the office and contact her directly if dmv were to give me any issue for renewing license.
