i hope we can do the right thing here and allow them to stay..there aren't any legal methods available to them?

Immigration authorities have rounded up nearly 200 Iraqis in recent weeks, and the Trump administration is now under heavy pressure to hold off moves to deport them.

Many of those currently detained are from the minority Chaldean Christian community, which faces severe persecution in Iraq.

U.S. immigration authorities say the detained Iraqis have criminal records, but their families and supporters say many have already served time or paid their fines and that they would face persecution if sent back.

We can do the right thing all day long. The question is, can this administration?

It is a conundrum.  What gets me is that some of these people came here to escape persecution yet they organized or participated in criminal activities which may have persecuted others and in some cases committed murder.  Is sending them back to Iraq the right thing to do?  I have no idea, but I am not sure they should be given a pass either.

if someone has done time or paid fines or whatever, i consider their debt in that regard paid. i haven't looked into each individual but there has to be a way for them to stay here, asylum - something. why would be necessary to deport them only to be killed?

I thought the US was not supposed to single groups out based on religious reasons?  Isn't that what KO'd Trump's first EO.  Why should they make exception in this case?  Maybe we should go back and implement the first EO, Iraq would then be on the list, so they would not take these people back.

1. providing asylum for someone facing religious persecution is not the same as stating that as president you're going to place a ban on muslims from entering the country.

2. they're already here, this has nothing to do with any of trump's ignorant eos.

While I'll agree that once you do the time for your crime that you should be able to move forward with you life, but the US has always been departing non US citizen after they get out of jail/prison. Can't peg this issue on only the current administration.

As some said, maybe Canada can help if all else fails. Didn't Canada say they would take any and all asylum seeker that the US won't? Not the ideal solution but it's better than the alternative.

i don't think any of these people are in prison right now facing deportation..maybe i didn't catch that part. i thought they'd all recently been rounded up by ice.

canada did say they would take them, and that's great. it's just, not right. it goes against everything america is supposed to stand for. but, clearly attitudes concerning americans providing safety to non americans has been changing pretty rapidly..

If the plan is to deport illegals or undocumented aliens with criminal records it will look really bad if these are excluded and allowed to stay. All the news articles call them the Iraqi Chaldean Christians as if this should exclude them from deportation on special grounds.

Does it not set a dangerous precedent to allow one group to stay but exclude others.?

Just read that these were legal but picked up for criminal activity.

Those targeted for deportation have criminal records, according to Rebecca Adducci, Detroit field officer for ICE. They are legal U.S. residents, but because they have criminal records, they were targeted for deportation, the government has said.

This policy has been in the books for awhile.

Deported from U.S., Cambodians fight immigration policy

"Every year, the U.S. deports thousands of immigrants who are convicted of crimes after they serve their prison terms -- including green card holders and those granted asylum. The policy dates back to the Clinton and Bush administrations as part of their efforts to step up national security."

This one served his time. He did his time, and paid his dues. Should he be deported for that?
