Process Clarification

Currently waiting our NOA2 and wanted to get some clarity because I've heard several answers.

Once we receive the approval, are we able to go ahead and fill out the DS160 and request the appointment? Do we wait a couple weeks? Does my fiance receive anything in the mail in Mexico beforehand? It would just be super helpful to have a better sense of expectations.

Appreciate it!

If this is for K1 visa, I would suggest you wait for the case number from NVC. After you receive your NOA2 (approval) from USCIC, your case will be transferred to NVC where you will get a new case number. You will use this case number for your appointment. You usually wait around 1-2 weeks after approval to call NVC for your case number.

You can already start filling out the DS160 and save online for the meantime though.

Once you receive your NOA2, you can begin calling NVC to see if they have your case number.  I believe I waited a day or two and then called every day until they gave me my case number.  Once you receive your NVC case number you can input it online to the CEAC status checker.  When it says "ready for interview" you can complete the DS-160, pay the visa fee and then schedule your interview.

For Nigeria, they only emailed me a packet on the places we were able to get the medical and the police certificate but I got this online from the embassy website before I got the email.  This is country-specific so you can look through the forums for Mexico to figure out how they do the packets.  A search would VJ would probably quickly give you the answer.

Yes that's true but I would say wait approximately 10 days before calling NVC ;) saves you a lot of time and effort. Lol

I think I MAY have waited a week lol.   My petition was approved in November 2015 when the Texas service center was still adjudicating petitions and had a huge backlog.  We waited 8 months for our NOA2 so I was not wasting another day, haha!

The NVC phone number is 603-334-0700

My case was approved on June 9th and as of yesterday morning, it was not yet at the NVC from the California Service Center. I was told it could take up to 6 weeks. It better not. This is supposed to be the easiest/quickest part of the process.

Thank you for sharing! So to confirm, the purpose of calling the NVC two weeks after NOA2 is track my case? My fiance should not "submit" his DS-160 until the CEAC says "ready for interview"? Also, can he submit his DS-160 prior to contacting the embassy? Or should wait until they receive his information from the NVC first? He's coming from Nigeria (if that matters).

Sorry if this is unclear. I'm just really trying to understand the next steps after NOA2 and purpose of calling the NVC instead of waiting for the letter to come in the mail. As you all can relate, we don't want to delay this process any longer than normal. I'm plan on calling them exactly at two weeks I just need to know what do I do next with the case number.

Thank you again!

My fiance is also from Nigeria.   Call the NVC about a week or two after NOA2 otherwise you'll be waiting much longer to get the paper on the mail.  I called NVC once a day, everyday until they had our case number.  It only took a few days.   The letter in the mail can come WEEKS after they assign your case number.  If you don't want to wait, then call and get your case number.

Once you get it, track it in CEAC.  When it says "ready for interview", complete the DS-160, pay the fee, and schedule your interview.  I would not advise doing this before it says "ready for interview".

That's the link for the packet.   Look at question 2 and download the K1 packet.   That's the embassy's website, so it's the most updated version.  This is what they will email you.  No need to wait for the email unless you'd rather wait.  There's no need to contact the embassy unless he has a specific question about his case.
