President Trump may have tweeted last week that he was being investigated for firing former FBI director James Comey, but that doesn't mean he meant it, according to White House adviser Kellyanne Conway.

During an appearance Monday on Fox and Friends, Conway was asked about Trump lawer Jay Sekulow's statement the previous day that the president was not under investigation.

"That's the president's personal lawyer. He's saying nobody every notified the president that he's under investigation," she replied. "What Jay Sekulow went on to say was that was the president responding to a Washington Post report that included five anonymous sources. And that's the president, in his 140 characters, through his significant social media platform, Ainsley, telling everybody, 'Wow, look at the irony here.'"

Last week, Trump tweeted, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt"

He did not specify who he was referring to, but was likely talking about Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed a special counsel to oversee the Justice Department's probe into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed to USA TODAY that Trump is indeed under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller and his team.
