WASHINGTON — An attorney for President Donald Trump was adamant on Sunday that the president is not under investigation, despite the president’s tweets this week referring to one as a "witch hunt."

“Let me be clear here,” said Jay Sekulow, a member of the president’s legal team, on NBC's “Meet The Press.” “The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction."

On Friday morning, President Trump sent a tweet that seemed to confirm that he was under scrutiny, writing, “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.”

But Sekulow claimed the president wasn’t referring to an actual investigation in the message, but instead a news report about one.

“The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking information to the Washington Post,” he said, referring to the Post’s report this week that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the election now also includes a look at whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

I met Jay a few times unfortunately. He was pretty scummy then and he certainly knows how to maintain that image now. He's the Benny Hinn of televangelawyerists... and he's soon going to find out he's bitten off more than he can chew.

The thing is I pretty much know that Jay has taken this case for two reasons: publicity and because Trump owes him a big favor... which I'm sure that's what was used in this deal. Whether anything real comes of that deal remains to be seen. It's a huge gamble playing with people's lives, of which Jay should be ashamed of doing. He only has a reputation in the fundamentalist circles that know him best, otherwise he's a hack. If you want someone to represent you on something as serious as this, you don't want this guy... but he's made himself appear over the years as if he's actually a hotshot, which most of us that come out of these circles know is just a big scam.

If Trump gets impeached and Pence packs it in, what's the worst case scenario for the left?  From what I have read Paul Ryan is next in line and then possibly Orrin Hatch.

Are either of these candidates likely to unify the Republican side and make it tougher for the Democrats for the next few years?

Depends, it likely means the Republicans can finally focus on getting the things done they want to do in a more classic and unified style... which is to say there will still be plenty of policies for Democrats to fight them on - but the millstone around their neck would be relieved. Of course what they will really focus on is losing control of seats for the next election, something that if they continue on the path they are... will be very damaged in the future. If Pence is left in charge, his 'image' per say is better in terms of scandal and behavior (even if his religious ideals are out there) and Republicans could deal with that... but there will be other issues such as what did the VP know and when did he know it that may tarnish him. And the big questions would be - would there be pardons? Would they keep on Pence after his term to run again or would they try and rebrand for a fresh start? Nothing will really make it tougher for Democrats... the GOP put themselves into the frying pan with no way to get out.

If it were me, I'd say for them to be bold, start over and rebrand, accept their mistakes and learn from it (same thing I'd say the Dems need to do).

Trump will not be impeached. There is nothing to impeach him for. Impeachment proceedings will go about as well as the Russian collusion investigation has gone. 7 months and who knows how many tax dollars and nothing of substance has been produced.

Both parties need to rebrand because neither of the candidates should have been put forward to begin with.

Is there room now for a third major party and what's the likelihood of one forming?

It's been clear with all the impeachment "news stories" since the day Trump was elected (before he was even inaugurated), the left are under the impression that a personality they don't like is criteria for impeachment. If we take all these high profile cases that involve Michael Brown, George Zimmerman, et al. and how wrong the left are virtually every time, it's clear they don't even have even a laymans understanding of law. It's funny because their lack of understanding derives from their own overly emotional tirades.

I'm sure there were people at the time who thought Nixon would not be impeached or that there was nothing to impeach him for. I'm sure there's some people that still feel that way even now. But I wasn't really stating exactly how I personally feel things will go, only answering the above speculation of what would happen afterwards, or the best way forward.

Of that I wholeheartedly agree!

..and I hope for that day where more third party candidates stop being a joke and start contributing to our political landscape. For now it's doubtful, they are only used as tools by the other parties in other to split the vote.

I don't expect him to be impeached at all. My own opinion is that there is a real dirty game of politics going on and I don't believe it's good for the USA at all.

It's sad to see the flag being burned and so much conflict at colleges, this will have an effect further down the road with possibly less foreign students applying to those colleges. From an outsider looking in the election happens and a president is elected, sure one side is not happy but Americans always seemed to get behind the flag and their president. This pride in your flag is what immigrants come for, but if Americans care less for it why should the immigrants.

My question was coming from the point of a dirty game of politics being played trying to get rid of a president, now the grass is not always greener on the other side. Assuming the driving force is the Democratic Party would getting Trump impeached not just create a unified republican party. So is a unified republican party with Ryan as president not worse for the democrats. Maybe a disfunctional White House with Trump is a better option for the Democratic party in the long term.

I am not asking what's best for the American people but politically what suits either party best.

The third party candidates would need form as a complete new party and not stand as independents. Both current parties seem to have members that do not really suit the traditional politics that one would identify as Republican or Democrat.

To me Trump was more of an independent that the Republicans had no choice but to support and Clinton was the straight up type of Democrat that no one wanted. If a dedicated group had got together properly there was a brief chance for a third party to have had a candidate win the last election.

Now Now be fair. They are not always wrong. They predictied lots of butt hurt after the election and predictied some would not accept the results of the election 😆😆😆
