Ok, I know right off the bat some of you will think they are cheesy movies...and I've only seen a few myself, but I'm interested in any suggestions of Bollywood films (even if they are cheesy) that some of you may have enjoyed. I watched Bride and Prejudice last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! :P

If you don't like 'em, ok, no problem...and this thread isn't for any political point of view on Indian culture *cough*....

So come on....let's have 'em...your suggestions that is!!:yes:

Some nice "Kollywood" (referring to Kodambakkam area of Chennai) films that may work:

  • Nayagan
  • Kuzhandaiyum Deivamum (basically think "Tamil version of 'Parent Trap')
  • Avvaiyaar
  • Veerapandiya Kattabomman (about a king of Thirunelvelli who rebelled against the British)

OK Bollywoods:

  • Ek Phool Do Mali (goes half an hour beyond what would have been a good ending--I guess this was "filler to extend to 3+ hours")
  • Andhaa Kaanoon (two parallel/intersecting stories: secondary, of Amitabh Bachhan, somewhat like "Double Jeopardy", but this was made 15 years prior)

2005/07/10 I-129F filed for Pras

2005/11/07 I-129F approved, forwarded to NVC--to Chennai Consulate 2005/11/14

2005/12/02 Packet-3 received from Chennai

2005/12/21 Visa Interview Date

2006/04/04 Pras' entry into US at DTW

2006/04/15 Church Wedding at Novi (Detroit suburb), MI

2006/05/01 AOS Packet (I-485/I-131/I-765) filed at Chicago

2006/08/23 AP and EAD approved. Two down, 1.5 to go

2006/10/13 Pras' I-485 interview--APPROVED!

2006/10/27 Pras' conditional GC arrives -- .5 to go (2 yrs to Conditions Removal)

2008/07/21 I-751 (conditions removal) filed

2008/08/22 I-751 biometrics completed

2009/06/18 I-751 approved

2009/07/03 10-year GC received; last 0.5 done!

2009/07/23 Pras files N-400

2009/11/16 My 46TH birthday, Pras N-400 approved

2010/03/18 Pras' swear-in

Wow you really like the oldies, don't you?

While we're on oldies, I liked paar a lot. I think it starred Naseeruddin Shah. Also Sholay! :)

Hey, the songs are best in oldies (1950's, degrading through to Hemant Kumar's passing)

cool! Oh and many times, the desi grocery stores do have rentals.

I like some that are a couple years old. I haven't had the chance to see anything made after 2003 or so I think, haha.

What I'd suggest:

Lagaan (2001)--- Not as cheesy as many other bollywood movies, I really liked it. It was not just a love triangle, more of a social struggle movie. The rains have failed, and the people of a small Indian village in Victorian India hope that they will be excused from paying the crippling land tax that their British rulers have imposed. Instead, the capricious British officer in charge challenges them to a game of cricket, a game totally alien and unknown to them. If they win, they get their wish; if they lose, however, the increased tax burden will destroy their lives. The people are terrified, but one man thinks the challenge is worth staking their entire future on. Will he convince the villagers to give it their best shot?

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge(1995) ---one of my fav's and one of the most popular movies ever in India I think. This love story from India spans the two worlds. Part of the story is set in London, where Chowdary Baldev Singh has brought up his family for the last twenty years. The other part is set in India, where his daughter escapes a love gone wrong and an admirer goes to chase after her.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)--- love this one too, always will because it's kind of the first one I ever saw. And it reminded me a little of the struggle Sujeet and I had to go through to get married. Yet this movie is much more of a hard situation than we had.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001) ---kind of a more "modern" type of movie. Three friends going through life trying to figure out love. They definitely tried to be more westernized in this movie. I liked it though.

There's more but I don't want to overload you!

The others are good too. JMHO. Paar shows you what it's like to be poor in India. To be treated like sh!t and to overcome. It's extremely touching.

As for Sholay, it's a cult-classic with Indian men my age. Men my age in India grew up to the movie and it's music. It's not a good film by any means but it'll give you a pretty good glimpse into one of the major films in Indian popular culture.
