$17,113 (if you are his only dependent)

That is correct but the petitioner doesn't actually have to earn this before filing the petition. They have to earn at that level or above when they sign and date the I-134, which is often several months after filing the petition. No income questions are asked at filing. If the petitioner doesn't earn enough, they can also use a co-sponsor.

The petitioner can be earning ZERO in the case of a student full time in school, which seems to be many who post on VJ, they would need a joint sponsor to help them in that case. And like phsbrk says income affidavit of support is needed at the interview, not when filing the petition. Edited by YuAndDan

Here's a link to the web site that will give you the information you want. The amount varies depending on the size of the family unit. Basically, minimum requirements are 125% of the poverty guidelines. The link has the updated requirements. Requirements are slightly different for Alaska and Hawaii. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1327.html

Ooh righto, I missed that part. Yeah, I wasn't making any money when I filed. The G-325A asks for employment history, but that's just for background checks, not to ensure that you have money.
