husband on CR-1

hi all,

 

just a quick question regarding my husband's CR-1.  my understanding is that CR-1 allows him to work once he is in the US, is that correct?  i remember filling out a document in regards to this (during the CR-1 process).  my question is - do we have any "proof" that he's allowed to work?  or he can just start working?

Yes correct. The stamp on the CR 1 visa that he received at POE is proof of his status until the actual GC arrives in the mail. He also needs to apply for SSN

(i thought the SSN was going to automatically be sent?  i remember filling out/checking the box saying he would like to receive it?  or do we have to go apply for it ourselves?)

hhaha you're right on the waiting!  but we haven't even received his green card yet.  only been back in the country for 2 weeks.

I was going to ask the same question. So is it better to just go and apply immediately or should we wait and see first?

You don't need the GC to move on with work, SSN, drivers licence , bank accounts etc. The stamped visa is the temporary green card.  The GC may arrive anywhere between 5 weeks after entry and 10 months.  No rhyme or reason!!! It will come but you don't need to wait  for it before moving on with life 

ohh okay will do!  but..what 'other ID's' would be valid?  other than his stamped passport, he only has IDs from his own country.

Even though I checked the box on the visa application I went and applied myself (on advice from Frankfurt consulate if I didn't receive SSN within three weeks of POE).   The card arrived within about three weeks after application and the green card about a week after that.

If you haven't received the SSN after two weeks, go to the office and apply.

 

Your husband can use the I-551 stamp in his passport as proof that he's authorized to work in the US however, he cannot get paid until he has his SSN. Be prepared that some companies who are not used to hiring immigrants may not know how the i-551 stamp works.

We went to the ss office IMMEDIATELY after my husband's arrival and received the card in 10 days or less. My husband did not want to risk waiting for his ss card.

can you let me know what you brought with you to the office?  what paperwork or documents you needed?

Passport, certified marriage certificate (or maybe it was the original), and his birth certificate. I cannot recall if we needed anything but my husband'' passport.

hi all,

just wanted to say we went to the SSN office today, and we were in and out within half an hour!  2/3 of the time was just waiting to be called to one of the counters.  all she asked for was his passport and his birth certificate (even though it was all in chinese), and then asked him if he'd ever been/visited the US before.  then we were done!  but i did also bring along his new bank account proof (with address), and some other items that have his name/US address on it as well.  none of it was asked for, though.  all in all, the BEST experience we've had in this entire spouse visa process!

just shared some of my experience

I am looking for a job now, the temporary VISA didn't help much, they ask for my Alien Number (and the A number did not show on the VISA) to make sure I could work here legally...
